About us
Our vision is a world in which people with power are accountable. It is a world in which resources are used wisely, decisions benefit everyone fairly, and people lead secure lives. We are catalyzing a new generation of active citizens and responsible leaders around the world by supporting change-makers to develop and implement positive ideas for integrity in their communities. By enabling people to generate the knowledge, skills and networks needed for accountability, we unleash positive social and economic change. We have three mutually-reinforcing objectives: to support a positive movement to build accountability; provide substantive, flexible and long-term support for those leaders who can collectively lead this movement within specific contexts; and support collaboration around accountability and open governance.

Journalists around the world are working under increasing pressure—facing legal threats, online harassment, financial roadblocks, and shrinking civic space. These aren’t just challenges for the media—they’re challenges for all of us. In the latest episode of our AccountabiliTea podcast, Co-CEO Cheri-Leigh Erasmus is joined by Danai Nhando (B Com, LLB, MBA) , human rights lawyer and social entrepreneur, and Nkosikhona Dibiti, Executive Director of Community Podium and journalist, to unpack the current state of media freedom. They explore: ✔️ Why legal protections often fall short in practice ✔️ How financial pressure quietly censors critical voices ✔️ The double-edged nature of social media ✔️ Why protection networks are essential ✔️ The role citizens play in defending press freedom When journalists are silenced, accountability suffers. When media spaces shrink, so does democracy. 🎧 Listen to the full conversation and read the blog: https://bit.ly/3E37Kyr #PressFreedom #CivicSpace #SocialJustice #AccountabiliTeaPodcast

🔍 How do we rebuild public trust in a time of democratic uncertainty? At the recent Open Government Partnership Africa & Middle East Regional Meeting and the GDC Africa Forum in Nairobi, people gathered to explore exactly that. We found that transparency, AI, and public participation were placed at the center of many solutions. In this reflection, Makomborero Carl Muropa, our Regional Programs Officer for Southern and East Africa, unpacks the urgency of open government reforms and Africa’s growing momentum in the fight for accountable leadership. 💬 “This year’s focus on digital governance couldn’t be more timely. The use of AI and other emerging technologies to automate record-keeping, procurement and to combat corruption is on the rise, allowing large and often slow government processes to become nimble and efficient." 🔗 Read the blog: https://bit.ly/3G6DC5H #OpenGovernment #OGP #Transparency #Democracy #AccountabilityLab #GDCForum #Africa

“The data from the beginning indicated that it would be around now that organizations are going to fall off a cliff, and that’s exactly what we’re beginning to see.” – Blair Glencorse More than a third of nonprofits that responded to Accountability Lab's survey following the US government's foreign aid cuts in January said they had less than three months of funding left. In an effort to preserve the development ecosystem that had been built – from people to infrastructure and intellectual property – AL, Development Gateway: An IREX Venture and Digital Public launched a partnership-matching platform connecting at-risk organizations with more stable ones. 👓 AL co-CEO Blair Glencorse spoke to the The Associated Press about how mergers, partnerships, and wind down services can help retain valuable knowledge and other assets: https://bit.ly/3Rbo17j

Wise words from our Co-CEO, Blair Glencorse. In a moment of uncertainty and change, these reminders about responsibility, care, and collective action ground us. We're committed to walking this path with courage and community. #SkollWF #ShiftThePower #SocialImpact #AccountabilityLab
Lots has already been said about the amazing Skoll Foundation #SkollWF and side-events last week- including the epic #sidebar and #marmalade. Cheri-Leigh Erasmus was on the big stage for Accountability Lab, and I was listening and learning around the sides in #Oxford all week including with some amazing friends at the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford. Ten bite-sized things I thought/ heard that seemed to resonate: 📌 The #risk we take in this moment has to be proportionate to the #privilege we have- we are all in the same storm, but very different boats. Those of us with privilege need to step up, right now. 📌 It is all about the #ecosystem not the "ego-system"- meeting this moment means leaving our own interests behind in service of the collective good. 📌 There is safety in individual #truth- when belief in collective truths seems to be crumbling, centering your values and your own individual beliefs is essential. 📌 We have to use what we have to #buildwhatweneed- the ways of working that we're looking for already exist, we don't need to start from scratch, we just need to build on them together. 📌 Change is political, not only technical; and it is non-linear- if the collapse of the #aidsystem only leads to the commodification of development efforts we are in trouble. Some of the hardest work we need to do does not lend itself to earned income models. 📌 We all have to identify where we can add value for the field at this point- asking #donors or anyone else to step in and simply support what we did previously is no longer a viable option. 📌 We have to decolonize systems now- and move away from a US-centric change narrative. That means efforts to #shiftthepower, change our operating practices and compensate local knowledge fairly. 📌 We need to reframe how we speak about our efforts to support international aid or #donoraid- it isn't resonating. How about a "movement for global public good?" 📌 We have to look after ourselves and give ourselves #grace. It is clear that there is deep trauma within the social sector at the moment, understandably. When the oxygen masks fall, you put on your own before helping others for good reason... 📌 Sadly, many, many social sector organizations are not going to make it through the next 6-12 months. It is devastating. We need to support dignified transitions for those organizations, people and assets- read more about how here: https://lnkd.in/e97cp3-g #cso #mergers #partnerships cc: Josh Powell, Topher Wilkins, Tom Wein, Amol Mehra, Jailan Adly, Seth Cochran, Heba Aly, Malka Older, Bryan M. These reflections from our Co-CEO, Cheri-Leigh Erasmus, cut right to the heart of where the sector is, and where it needs to go. The disruption is real, but so is the opportunity to build something more just, collaborative, and sustainable. #SkollWF #AccountabilityLab #ShiftThePower #CivilSociety
What a week at the #SkollWF! Having difficult, yet transformative and solutions-focused conversations felt incredibly timely. A few of my reflections on the path forward for the international development sector: + We must truly commit to cross-sector collaboration to do more with less in the development space. That means stepping beyond competitive dynamics and taking a hard look at where duplication exists. + Adopting a movement mindset can help us work more efficiently, with greater unity and clarity in meeting the needs of this moment. + Whether or not we asked for this level of disruption, it's here, and we’re living it. But we also have a rare opportunity to co-create something better: a more equitable and just future where power is reimagined. + We have very little time. Organizations are struggling ans closing their doors. We need to work rapidly to sustain the good work people are doing. + We need new, relatable ways of talking about international development and the work of civil society. But that new narrative needs to be inclusive, and we need the right narrators. Storytellers shape the story. It was also such a joy to reconnect with so many brilliant friends and colleagues—people who are working tirelessly and thinking creatively under immense pressure. I’m energized to reimagine, resource, and rebuild anew. Let’s do it together. ❤️ Accountability Lab Blair Glencorse Bryan M. S. Josh Powell Tom Orrell Tina Ajuonuma Malka Older
