About us
The a2 Collective represents the National Institute on Aging’s (NIA) Artificial Intelligence and Technology Collaboratories for Aging Research (AITC) program -- which is dedicated to helping Americans live longer, better through the application of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. The a2 Collective is comprised of three AITC Collaboratories centered at Johns Hopkins University, the University of Massachusetts, and the University of Pennsylvania. The a2 Collective hosts a $40M annual national pilot competition called the a2 Pilot Awards which seeks to fund transformative AI technology pilot projects that will improve the care and health outcomes for older Americans, including persons with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementia (ADRD). Successful projects may be selected for multi-year commitments and be more competitive for follow-on Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) funding. Pilot awardees may also receive access to the study sites, data sets, and resources at each AITC as well as mentorship from industry and university experts, major healthcare systems, and venture capitalists. The application period for the fifth annual a2 Pilot Awards will take place from Dec 2 to Jan 15, 2025. For details on how to apply, please visit a2PilotAwards.ai

Thanks to the a2 Collective | a2PilotAwards.ai and hosts at MassAITC for bringing together a community of innovators in Boston to talk about #AI, #aging and #dementia! It was a jam packed two days full of old and new connections and insights into technology, brain health and aging. Sharing a few things I learned: ➡️ Cognition varies on both a short term (days, weeks) and long term (aging, disease) basis. In the short term, variation due to factors like social activity, physical activity, stress can lead to cognitive variation that can be the equivalent of 2-5 years of age related decline. Data collection on a short time scale is rarely used and an opportunity to provide a much more nuanced picture of cognition and, importantly, cognitive function. ➡️ In particular, on a short term basis, social interactions can boost #cognition for two days, most pronounced in people who are more socially isolated. ➡️ Removal of demographic data encoded in medical AI models actually leads to better performance and fairness, particularly in subgroups, by removing demographically biased prediction shortcuts. ➡️ New technology (such as an exoskeleton) can help address the challenge of ensuring patients receive enough “dosage” of #rehabilitation at home, given the challenges associated with mobility and in person visits. Bringing #accessible rehab into the home, addressing the social and behavioral effects on #cognition and driving patient outcomes through fair #AI is at the core of what we are building at Moneta Health. Until next year! Michael Busa Corinna Serviente Jessie Ng David R. Paquette, PhD

Thank you to The Penn AI and Tech Collaboratory for Healthy Aging and a2 Collective | a2PilotAwards.ai for providing the opportunity to present our Aliviado Health Care Partner dementia symptom management app that uses AI in helping nudge care partners in behavioral symptom prioritization and development of a non-pharmacologic strategy driven care plan. We're part way through our feasibility study. If you know of care partners of persons living with dementia who might be interested in being an initial tester, please have them reach out to our team at aliviado-caregiving@nyu.edu

✨ Had an amazing time at the #a2NationalSymposium. Loved being part of the #Funders and #Dealmakers #ReversePitch panel alongside such an impressive group of investors. Super energizing talking with so many innovative founders during the #SpeedMentoring Sessions. 🌈 Some highlights for me: Connecting with John Ralston and learning about Neursantys which 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙨 balance to meaningfully reduce the likelihood of falls. Hearing from Pattie Maes about some of the great 𝗰𝗼-𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 being done at the MIT Media Lab ( 🙌 designing with, not for older audiences FTW❣️). Getting a chance to connect with Hon Pak of Samsung Electronics who's talk 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝗡𝗼 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲: 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 at SXSW in 2022 with Deborah Di Sanzo was when I realized #AgeTech was a thing. In-depth conversations with fellow funders Alan MacIntosh, Denise Saltojanes, Jim Doscher, James Hueston, John Brzezenski, Jeff Chu and Bailey Paxton ⛵. The conversations I started and look forward to continuing with Susann Keohane ( 😂 Loved the✨ 𝘙𝘦𝘸𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳... story you shared) and Catherine Sarkisian a #Geriatrician from San Diego about meaningful lab result information, personalized for older audiences. David R. Paquette, PhD thanks so much for the invite and Stephen Liu for the guidance. Allison Byers loved having a chance to represent. #PutAWomanOnIt
