When coaching clients on career pivots, one of the most powerful tools they have is their past experiences. Even if their previous roles or industries seem unrelated to their new direction, those experiences are a goldmine of transferable skills, lessons, and insights. Here’s how they can harness their past for success: 1. Identify Transferable Skills Make a list of skills from past jobs and map them to the requirements of the new career path. 2. Leverage Past Achievements Create a "success story bank" with examples of achievements that align with the new career’s goals. 3. Reframe Their Narrative Practice telling their career pivot story in a way that highlights continuity and purpose.

When coaching clients on a career pivot, I help them tap into their past experiences. First, we identify transferable skills like leadership, problem-solving, and communication. Then, we craft a story that connects their growth and shows how past roles prepared them for this new chapter. I also emphasize how their unique perspective from a different industry can be an asset. A growth mindset is key—learning and adapting are strengths. Finally, I encourage networking with others who've pivoted, offering support and new opportunities. It’s about using what they’ve learned to fuel the next step.

Use data to showcase skills applied in past projects that aligns with the new role. 2. Identify the real “why” for making a pivot and things you have started learning for the new career path. 3. Take up a volunteer role or work with a mentor in the interim to learn the skills and expertise required for the new role.
