What are the key steps to plan and design a primary research project?

In my view, one of the first aspects would be defining the research problem as clearly and as detailed as possible through data primary sources and extant literature which strengthens the research arguments. Applying the design thinking eases the problem definition. Then, identify the research paradigms (positivist / interpritivist/ post modernist/ pragmatist etc), aim, research questions, objectives, appropriate research methods (quantitative/ qualitative &Mixed methods), data collection, analysis, findings, theoretical contribution & practical contribution. Over and above, the theoretical lens (systems thinking, socio technical systems theory, etc) would be like a beacon to guide the researcher during their research endeavor.

The foundation of primary research lies in a clearly defined problem. Identify the issue you want to address, outlining its scope, context, and significance. Formulate a specific, relevant, and feasible research question or hypothesis to guide your investigation. Originality is key, ensuring your work breaks new ground. This well-defined problem will steer your choice of research design and methods, ultimately leading to a focused and impactful study.

Depending on the subject one is considering researching, I would suggest reviewing at least a taste of the existing literature first. It doesn't have to be an exhaustive review. But having an idea of what has already been written - and what has not - will be an enormous help in defining one's research question. This is certainly true if one is trying to research something that has not been researched before. However, it is equally true if one is trying to replicate someone else's previous research on a topic (such as replicating a sociology study).

What a lot of people, especially students at the undergraduate and master's levels, is the wealth of literature that is already out there on many topics. It's like deciding if you'll ask people questions, watch what they do, or maybe even try something out to see what happens. Each method is like a different tool for understanding your topic. For example, surveys are like asking a lot of people for their thoughts, while interviews are like having one-on-one conversations. Picking the right method helps you gather the details you need to answer your research questions and puts you on the path to finding out new and interesting things.
