How do you choose the best method for your primary research project?

Define Your Research Objectives: before diving into the vast ocean of research methods, it's crucial to define your research objectives clearly. Are you looking to understand consumer preferences, evaluate market trends, or gauge customer satisfaction? Each objective requires a different approach. By establishing your research goals, you will have a compass to guide you toward the most appropriate method. Let's say you're interested in launching a new flavor of ice cream. Your research objective could be to determine the target audience's preferences and potential demand for the new flavor.

This is paramount. Not only should it be specific, relevant, and feasible - it MUST be ACTIONABLE. “Nice to know” is useless to key stakeholders and respondents/participants. Don’t waste time, money and brainpower unless it the goal, objective and questions therein are timely, accurate, and actionable.

Defining your research question involves clarifying the scope, purpose, and expected outcomes of your study. Begin by identifying a specific topic of interest, then narrow it down to a clear and focused research question. Consider the significance of your inquiry, ensuring it aligns with existing literature and contributes meaningfully to your field. As the instruction on the left suggests, the methodology I use must be intimately connected to the question I am asking. I would argue that approaching the process the other way around - being comfortable with a particular methodology and then trying to find appropriate research questions is somewhat problematic. Being comfortable, therefore, with multiple methodologies - quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods, comparative analysis, social network analysis, etc. - would be the best way to start and then the emphasis should be on letting the research question dictate the choice and the process.

This is where a knowledgeable Market Research professional is invaluable. This person can sort through the brainstorming and determine what is most important for strategic actionability. From there, they can assist in determine the most time/cost and actionable methodology (singular or multiple) and instruments to best accomplish the agreed upon goals and objectives. This is where my four Cs come into focus... COMMUNICATION and COLLABORATION among everyone involved is the first step. CREATIVITY from the MR professional, factors in after talking/listening and coming to actionable goals and objectives. At this point, COMMITMENT, takes over. EVERYONE must be engaged and onboard with EVERYTHING else to this point.

When aiming for causation or generalizability, experimental or quasi-experimental designs may be suitable. Strive to match your research design with the specific objectives of your study, ensuring it aligns with the type of data you aim to collect and the depth of analysis required.

Assess the nature of your research question, available resources, and ethical considerations when deciding on the most suitable data collection method. Combining methods, known as triangulation, can enhance the robustness of your findings by cross-verifying information obtained through different channels.

An experienced MR professional should already have an analysis plan in place, before the end of data collection. Utilizing that “road map,” they might see other insights that require additional insight. They explore these “gems” and add to the top-line analysis. Once top-line insights and metrics are determined, it’s a good idea to review with key stakeholders for this perceptions. Often, their internal knowledge gleans further actionable takeaways and implications. Here again, Communication, Collaboration, and Commitment lead to a more robust, actionable deliverable.

Analyzing your data is a crucial step that demands a thoughtful approach. Begin by organizing and cleaning the data to ensure accuracy. Choose appropriate statistical or qualitative analysis techniques based on your research design and the type of data collected. Transparently report your methods and findings, acknowledging any limitations and considering the broader implications of your data analysis.

Share your results, using visuals like charts or graphs for clarity. Interpret findings in relation to your research question, highlighting key patterns or trends. Maintain clarity, objectivity, and precision throughout your report, allowing readers to grasp the significance of your research
