With 22 years doing this business have realised that Data can make or break all the hardwork that has gone in designing or configuring a system. Following steps can add value to the process - Data governance structure & policy creation ( both for data creation and retention) - System landscape detailed out with data exchange and with detailed data structure - Data harmonisation , slow but gradually build a strong Data management system - involve business in each step of it ( because theory would only take you so far ) - each time a IT program starts , initiate data workshop and data analysis at the time of requirements gathering. The biggest mistake I see in most organizations is that Data and its Migration is most often looked at the later part of an ERP project / transformation. It should actually be addressed prior to and during the entire project and if possible with a Master data governance strategy. Data Archiving and cleanup prior to the project can also help . Strict Data mapping and transformation rules and testing with at least 1/3 to 1/2 the actual data set would also help during Integration test cycles. Volume and stress testing for performance are also sometimes ignored since Data comes in as an afterthought.

Day zero planning is important aspect when it comes to Data. Apart from the regular data strategy and migration activities, I suggest to plan and execute your Data foundation in close alignment with the future/current process and key decision making situations that can use machine learning patterns. Also when a design is finalised, run through a day in a life through role plays for critical processes. Data is a key parameter in every stage of your transformation, hence your budget towards Data in all these transformation should be the top spend!!!
