How can you use routing to segment a network?

Network segmentation is the technical process from wich you plan an give order to your organization or network IP Addressing. A good network segmentation should help you manage endpoints (user and servers) in the network, have scalability and growth, also to plan efficient routing schemes and to secure the network because segmentation could be used to fitler traffic trough a Firewall. A good tool to help you with this are IPAMs or DDIs. Also if you don’t know the network autodiscovery tools are also available in the market. Network segmentation is an essential skill that network engineers should master.

Segmenting a network involves dividing it into smaller, logically isolated segments to enhance security, manageability, and performance. Routing is a key mechanism to achieve network segmentation by controlling the flow of traffic between these segments. Here's how you can use routing to segment a network: Design Subnets: Divide your network into subnets based on logical criteria such as departments, functions, or security requirements. Each subnet should have a unique IP address range. Assign IP Addresses: Assign IP addresses to devices within each subnet. Devices within the same subnet share the same network address and can communicate directly with each other.

Dynamic routing, using protocols like OSPF and BGP, automatically adjusts to network changes, offering flexibility. I have utilized both in different scenarios: static routing for smaller, predictable networks, and dynamic routing for larger, more complex environments. There are also different type of routing protocols, link state and distance vector, I'd suggest to look into it for those of you are new to the "world" of routing.

Network operators should choose routing protocols and designs that are appropriate for the scale. Large networks with many subnets should deploy NLSP to avoid broadcast madness. But even with periodic announcement, RIP/SAP will work well for smaller installations. Either solution is fairly straightforward, due to modern IPX's robust auto-configuration.

It also plays a critical role in network scalability, allowing for the smooth addition of new nodes and segments.

Routing complexities arise from network size, topology changes, and diverse traffic patterns. Managing a large number of routing tables and protocols can be challenging. In my experience, balancing load distribution and maintaining route consistency in dynamic environments are significant hurdles. Additionally, ensuring security in routing, to prevent issues like route hijacking, requires constant vigilance and expertise.

To get started with learning routing is to understand the following: 1. There are only 5 Internal routing protocols - RIP, EIGRP, OSPF, ISIS, IBGP. Of them the most commonly used are OSPF & EIGRP in Campus & Enterprise networks and IBGP, OSPF & IS-IS in Data Centre Networks. RIP is almost dead but RIPng might make a comeback as it supports IPv6. 2. There is only one external routing protocol that the whole world uses BGP or EBGP to be more specific. Spend time learning the concepts behind how these routing protocols work. Then build your own labs and practice as much as you can. One other thing to learn about is VRFs. VRFs were common place in Service provider networks. This is now commonly used in Data Centre networks (aka Tenants).

Deciding what kind of filtering you want to do between subnets can help determine where subnet boundaries should be located. L3 switching is efficient, but when it comes to filtering traffic between segments tools like ACLs are not as robust as NGFWs. Terminating the L3 boundary on your NGFWs allows for the most powerful filtering, but these devices must be sized appropriately to handle east-west traffic. A compromise between the two above options is grouping like subnets into VRFs and routing to other VRFs/subnets through the firewalls.

Something to consider for proper segmentation is building a good IP plan. Having this will make your work a lot easier and you can ensure that your routing tables are as optimal as possible. Planning/designing your IP allocation will also allow you to segment networks with growth in mind and fewer operational changes. It would be recommended to see this as 'hand in glove' with using routing to segment your networks.
