Something to consider here is a 'defense in-depth' approach. Designing security in a layered fashion so there are security controls spread out in a redundant fashion with variable functionalities. This includes macro & micro segmentation where applicable. Quite often some security architectures rely heavily on a single set of UTM Firewalls or VPN gateways or ALB's running firewall services, non standardized deployments of AAA etc. These can become chokepoints and compromise the reliability of your network. In my opinion, to ensure reliability in distributed networks, we should adopt a redundant design with multiple data paths to eliminate single points of failure. Use load balancing for even traffic distribution and prevent resource overload. Implement BGP for efficient routing across networks and OSPF/EIGRP within systems. Employ VLANs or VXLANs for network segmentation and congestion reduction. Continuously monitor network performance, with automated failover for quick outage recovery. Apply QoS to prioritize essential traffic and maintain consistent service. In cloud scenarios, utilize AWS Direct Connect or Azure ExpressRoute for stable, direct cloud connections. This strategy guarantees high availability and reliability.

Reliability will mean different things to the network’s different customers. Consider from which vantage point your design must be reliable. State early in design what your measurement of reliability is and how you define it. For many it is about uptime. Others it is error rate or availability. A reliable network is one that does what it is intended to do when and how it is intended to do it. To achieve reliability plan for maintainability and special cases in your design. Manage special cases so that your Ops team can run them. Design in security and change. Design based on solid requirements and then make sure you can lose several pieces of your design and the network keeps going. Finally keep an eye on your subscription model.

One thing I found helpful is optimizing network design is a process because most of the time the first thing that reaches our mind usually have lots of issues and blind spots. Also considering best practices we should use them but don't rely on them. Some times your application calls for a change to the best practice.
