How do you handle changes in your clients' career paths?
-
When a client shifts career goals, it is imperative to have a candid discussion with the client about the motivations. Often, amidst these conversations, the initial motivation was a temporary approach to a problematic solution, when in reality, it was not truly something the client was truly interested in pursuing. It is imperative to have a regular cadence of check-in and to continue to engage in the "why" exercise to determine the reason behind the shifting focus. Work with the client to establish a map that allows multiple scenarios and results to truly assess the clear direction they truly want to pursue. Encourage the client to engage in job sharing or shadowing opportunities to have clarity surrounding goals and to gain clarity.
-
When dealing with a client with shifting career goals, its crucial to reassess their objectives, and their why. And then adjust the activities to be followed to go for it. If these changes happen frequently, it may be a good idea to dig deeper in order to find the reason why he changes targets so often.
-
Treat their shifting goals like a moving compass—acknowledge the changes while anchoring them in a clear direction. Start by exploring the “why” behind each shift to uncover core values and motivations driving their decisions. Use tools like vision exercises or priority mapping to clarify long-term objectives. Break the journey into short-term, actionable milestones that allow flexibility while ensuring progress. Reframe changes as part of exploration, not derailment while holding them accountable for their bigger vision. This approach keeps momentum steady and focused despite the shifts.

When a client has a few ideas for career development, it's great. Especially for people with immigration background in Germany, with whom I work most often. The main thing is not to stop and every time to make at least a small step towards your goals, even if something does not work out - to try to test new hypotheses for finding a job. With each new hypothesis a person's understanding of the labour market in the country where he or she is looking for a job will expand. In my opinion it is absolutely normal to move and adapt your career goals, the main thing is not to give up and surround yourself with supportive people.
-
When clients shift career goals, maintaining momentum requires adaptability and a structured approach. Building on the mentioned strategies, emphasize the importance of regular reflection to identify the underlying motivations behind these shifts. This can help uncover deeper values or external influences driving the changes. In my experience, co-creating a flexible yet actionable plan that incorporates short-term milestones keeps clients engaged while allowing room for evolution. Encouraging them to view their transferable skills as assets across diverse paths fosters confidence and resilience during transitions.
