You've just finished a job interview. How can you make sure you get the job?

I've recruited for 20 plus years, a thank you note is a relationship builder for the long term, and that is the real value. If you haven't articulated your fit during an interview, it is unlikely that you're going to do so strongly enough in a thank you note to let that be the determining factor.

Always send a thank you note after the interview to show gratitude and your keen interest in the role. Personalize your message, restate your strong fit for the role and highlight major points from the interview. The goal is to be a memorable candidate.

Sadly, I'm seeing less and less students aware of the importance of sending a thank you note to an interviewer(s) after their interview. Sending a note of thanks which includes a statement of the candidate's enthusiasm for the position/organization and a reminder of how they will be able to contribute to the team through their strengths and skills and experience is definitely a way of separating a candidate from the competition. If 2 candidates are more or less equal in experience/skills/enthusiasm for the role and one sends a thank you and the other doesn't - who do you think will get the job?

1. Treat the interview as if you are a consultant not a candidate. 2. During the interview look for Follow Up points that you can use as an excuse to contact them about later after the obligatory Thank You. For example, I have sent an email the day after the interview with links or examples of my work that I references in the interview. It shows that I follow up quickly, gives examples of my work, and is another excuse to show my value. 3. Forget it ever happened. Once you've reach out to thank them and potentially a follow up email as described above, the best thing is to move on and keep applying. If it's meant for you it will happen. The only exception is if another offer comes through and you want to give them a chance to make an offer.

A “thank you” note is helpful but should be well designed. In addition to expressing gratitude for the interview, include a brief confident statement reiterating the matches of your credentials to the job as discussed. Also, include any critical information you might have forgotten to share during the interview. Ask if there is additional information needed by the employer. Candidates should also forward a follow-up note closer to the anticipated hiring decision date. These steps might not land the job, but they will put your name in front of the employer and demonstrate genuine interest in the job.

If you landed an interview and swiftly made it past the majority of candidates in the field, you don’t want to fumble at the goal line… follow-up is critical and can make the difference between receiving an offer or a rejection. A timely, professional response is a great way to reinforce your game to excel in the job!

You need to clearly articulate your interest and why you are the best choice DURING the interview. Quickly and accurately following any post-interview requirements, staying in touch, sending well thought out thank you notes all help, but there really is nothing you can do to make a company hire you.

Don't underestimate the value of a well written thank you note. In that note, you should mention what things excited you about the job, and highlight how your skills matched the things discussed.

Thank you note is key part in building a connection, it really demonstrate your interest on the specific position. Getting names of panel members and following with personalized message can open doors to non-published opportunities within the organization. Not to forget to add ways to be contacted.

After your interview, if you got any tasks like sending documents, doing an assignment, or listing references, act fast and do it right. It shows you listen, care, and are excited about the job. Also, let them know you've followed through. This quick action can really impress.

I think this is something that has helped me understand what I needed to make the transition in Higher Education. I had a lot of interviews when I was trying to switch from Welfare to work sector to Education. I connected with the people that interviewed me, asked for in person and online catch to understand more of what I could do in an interview to make sure next time I could get the job. They advice I got really got me to understand where the serious gaps where in my learning and I was able to focus on addressing them.

After your interview, stay in touch without overdoing it. No need to flood them with calls or emails. Just send a polite update or question, and maybe connect on LinkedIn to share things that matter to your field. It keeps you on their radar without seeming desperate.

Many candidates make the mistake of just asking about their application status without adding anything valuable. This can make you seem self-centered. So, try to share something useful that shows you're still excited about the job. Don't just send an email saying, "Any status of my interview?" Also, don't spam your interviewer with emails or calls. Sometimes, less is more. It's better to send fewer messages and make each one count. Cheers!

You can't make sure you get the job after an interview. You do your best, follow-up with a thank you. Then keep looking until you have a written offer in your hands from the right company.

I think we stress ourselves out too much worrying about the decision. If an opportunity is meant for you, it will happen! If you didn't get the job, then learn how you can do better next time or see if you can get feedback on what the other candidates had that you may not have presented. A rejection is just a redirection to something better than you imagined! Remember that.

While waiting for a reply, gear up for what’s next. Dive deeper into the company, role, or industry. Get ready for a possible second interview or talks about your package. Refresh your portfolio or CV. And don’t stop job hunting or networking—keep your options open, whether you land this job or decide to look elsewhere.

You can't control if you get the job or not, but you can control what you take from that interview experience. Reflect on the whole interview process, from your preparation to the interview. Listen and acknowledge. Think about how well you listened during the interview. Did you really get the question and acknowledge it before answering? Actively listening and acknowledging shows you respect the interviewer's input, prevents misunderstandings, and helps you give better answers. Also, be honest with yourself about where you can improve. Maybe you found certain questions tricky or got nervous at times. Admitting these areas can help you get better for future interviews. As soon as you can after an interview write down: What you were asked What were the main points of your answer How did you "feel" about each question and your answer (REMEMBER WE ARE OFTEN MORE CRITICAL OF OURSELVES THAN A RECRUITER SO GO GENTLY ON YOURSELF) Were there any questions that were a complete surprise REFLECT ON YOUR SPONTANEOUS ANSWER .. WHAT COULD YOU DO/SAY DIFFERENTLY Ask yourself ... do I think/feel I would like to work within this organisation/culture Finally a No doesnt mean No forever...it can mean not yet And a YES means ... now I can decide...and any decision I make doesn't have to be forever. Interviews are a professional fact finding conversation for both parties. This includes interview feedback.

After the job interview; keep calm and lower your expectations regardless of how good you feel about your performance. Every job interview is a lesson; win or lose; this is just a path to your dream job. Make sure you send a follow up mail to thank them for the opportunity and wait patiently for feedback. Note: Don’t relent in your job search even if you have been assured of the job after the interview; keep pushing until you land a suitable one.

As it has been said multiple times before, the thank you note. Maybe a day or two later a well crafted email letting them know you are still interested. The one thing many others do not consider is that the other candidates can be better equipped for the role. This is happens more times than many people want to discuss.

Why leave this critical part up to chance? BEFORE you leave the interview, make sure you align how you help with what type of person they're looking for. Once you leave the interview, you're rolling the dice and I don't like your odds.

Finally, remember that job hunting is exhausting. It takes a lot of energy. And it may take longer to get a job than you hoped or expected. It’s normal to be restless and tempted to send notes to hiring managers, even if it’s just to feel like you’re doing something. Keep trying your best to channel that energy into something else productive. Volunteer, sign up for networking events, apply to more jobs. Any one of those activities is a good outlet for your energy and is likely to lead to greater opportunities down the line. Keep positive!
