Simplifying communication isn’t about dumbing things down, it’s about making the message as clear and concise as possible without losing or distracting from its meaning. Jargon isn’t inherently bad. Among specialists, it can make communication more efficient. But when language is used without considering the audience, it should be clearly defined and consistently applied. Ultimately, this isn’t just about individual effort, it’s about fostering a culture where clear, inclusive language is the norm.

The phrase that comes to mind was attributed to Albert Einstein, "Make things as simple as they can be, but no simpler" It can be tempting to fall into the trap of using overly complex language to impress. Fight that urge and be aware of the curse of knowledge, i.e. the inability to remember what it was like before you understood in great detail what you are explaining. You want to describe your complex idea to someone who might not be an expert, but not be condescending. Imagine you're speaking to a good friend, who works in a completely different industry with different hobbies and interests. That way, you'll be conscious of explaining it clearly and simply but at the same time demonstrating respect to them.

If the language barrier is an issue, use a translator. This translator can be a real person who is on sight, or someone who can appear virtually to convey the message. Alternatively, use a language translation app, prompt it to simplify the message to the level of a 12 year old.

I’d be mindful of my audience, just like newspapers are when they use language that fits their readers. Imagine if a newspaper used academic English, it would confuse most readers and lose their attention. While I see the value of interactive learning in education, I tend to hire self-motivated learners—people who, once interested in a subject, can educate themselves far more efficiently than I could teach them. For my teams, this approach wouldn’t be the most effective learning tool. That said, I can see how incorporating interactive learning into team-building exercises could be valuable. By blending problem-solving activities with games that strengthen team cohesion, you not only reinforce key concepts but also reinforce company culture or internal practices that need emphasis. In that context, it becomes more than just a learning exercise but, a way to align teams and reinforce shared values.

A great approach is Guided Discovery (GD), which fosters autonomy, curiosity, and critical thinking. Though time consuming, it leads to deeper retention by linking new content to prior knowledge. A rule that has been ‘discovered’ is more memorable than one that has simply been presented.

A simple way to enhance engagement is through the 'Self-Reference' method. This approach mentally engages learners by helping them see how the material is relevant to their role or circumstances. Even the most interactive learning strategies can be ineffective if learners don’t see personal value or practical application in what they’re being taught. To maximize effectiveness, activities like role-playing, problem-solving, and hands-on learning should be paired with self-referencing to ensure deeper understanding and retention.

Of course! Anytime you’re discussing a project with someone, you have to engage with them both as a person and in the context of their role within the project. That’s just basic communication. This also ties back to a previous topic re:analogies. Just as the right analogy helps different audiences grasp a concept, tailoring an explanation to someone’s specific role ensures relevance. I’ve said before that using multiple analogies can be more effective than relying on a single one. Breaking a complex idea into smaller, digestible parts and then reconstructing it for shared understanding works better. The same principle applies here: the more you align communication with an individual’s perspective, the more effective it becomes.

This is absolutely essential, particularly for unfamiliar technical topics. Understanding doesn’t happen all at once, it’s built, step by step, like lego bricks. Each layer provides the foundation for the next. You start by understanding where they are, where they want to go, and how their growth aligns with the company’s needs. From there, you create a structured plan to develop them, carefully managing all the factors that influence their progress like challenges, introductions, involvement at different levels, and more. It’s a lot like raising a child—balancing guidance, you assistance in their challenges, or your support in helping them reach their full potential, all while helping them stay engaged and motivated along the way.
