The word "Networking" can sound and feel transactional. I try to guide my clients to shift their focus. Instead of approaching it as a task, I encourage them to see it as an opportunity to build community, form genuine connections, and bring their value to others.

I’ve literally networked with clients so they learn first hand. I reach out on behalf of clients, then give them scripts to repeat for themselves. I give them talking points and objectives for conversations. I have them follow up on a preset schedule. It’s not that they struggle, it’s that they have never been shown how. Once they see it, try it, and have the support to follow through, the shyness and fear melts away.

Encourage clients to start small by reaching out to existing connections and joining relevant industry groups. Equip them with clear goals, personalized scripts, and tips for engaging meaningfully in conversations. Guide them to build authentic relationships, emphasizing value exchange over transactional networking.

When clients struggled with networking, I helped them build authentic connections by focusing on clarity and confidence. We refined their personal brand and crafted a compelling elevator pitch to communicate their unique strengths. I guided them to identify relevant industry events, professional groups, and online platforms like LinkedIn for strategic networking. To build confidence, we practiced role-playing conversations, follow-ups, and personalized outreach. I emphasized the importance of nurturing relationships by providing value before seeking favors. By fostering consistency, active listening, and a mindset of giving, my clients developed networks that significantly boosted their career opportunities and professional growth.

Ask them to look for 1. Organic connect This can be achieved by being part of groups, clubs, organization, catering specific to your objective Example: Wanting to sell premium products or services, you need to move with HNI clients 2. Online connect Look for opinion makers, decision makers, influences who have achieved good position in their lives and they are willing to guide others Example: Platforms like LinkedIn, Clutch.co etc will serve you good Understand that people are always ready to help others, only,if they are asked the right questions and mentorship. The hit ratio works here as well,so aim for good numbers and be in the probable list of worthy networks to qualify further for the possibility of quality connect. Best wishes!
