I've often use historical debates to get students to think through the ideas they've learned, rather than simply writing summaries in their notebook. For example, to understand the differences between Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Jean Jacques Rousseau' s understanding of the social contract, having students craft a dialogue is very beneficial. Students have to summarize and paraphrase complex ideas in their own words, understand what these thinkers agree on, and where they disagree, and the relevance of their ideas for contemporary political debates.

5 Historical Simulations

A fifth PBL activity that can incorporate historical research is engaging in simulations. Simulations are activities that recreate or model a historical situation or scenario, such as a war, a crisis, a negotiation, or a decision. They can be played as games, role-plays, or scenarios, and they can use different media and tools, such as maps, cards, dice, or computers.
