At the end of 2008, Canadians were told their country was entering a recession on the heels of the financial crisis that shook the United States. Suddenly, reports of once-solid companies in trouble, unemployment, and massive investment loss dominated the media. Despite an abundance of information on the subject, many people still wonder just how we got into this state.
A number of experts on the economy at the University of Ottawa are keen to share their knowledge with the public and have been doing just that through a variety of means. Their research interests are as vast as their expertise spanning finances, international regulations, history of economic thought, macro- and micro-economics, evolutionary economics and public policy and growth and economic integration. Department of Economics Professor Serge Coulombe received the 2009 President's Award for Media Relations for his contributions to providing insight and context on the economic situation.
Whether it's through individual research or their media commentary experts such as Serge Coulombe (Department of Economics), Tyler Chamberlin (Telfer School of Management), Patrick Leblond (Graduate School of Public and International Affairs), Jacqueline Best (School of Political Studies) and Mario Seccareccia (Department of Economics) are helping us better understand the complex economic questions at a local, national and international level.
