Technical Services - The Morphology Unit
Introduction
The Morphology Unit is a full-service research histology lab, located in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine of the University of Ottawa. Since 1996, the Unit has served the University and the Ottawa Region as a full service histology lab available to students, faculty, researchers, and clinicians. We commonly meet with individuals in need of histology services to coordinate research, teaching or clinical work. Most work is set up on an individual basis to accommodate the needs of our clients. We are available to teach, train, consult, advise, collaborate and provide technical support.
Personnel
The laboratory is under the direction of Dr. Jean Michaud, MD, FRCPC and is managed by Ms. Louise Pelletier MLT, ART a certified histotechnologist, with over 25 years of experience in histology and specimen quality control. Additional professional personnel include: Dr. Doug Franks PhD specialist in histological image analysis, Ms. Zaida Ticas, RT, Ms. Li Dong, Research Technician and Eric Labelle, Technician.
Facility and Equipment
The Morphology Unit Laboratory is located at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ottawa in Roger Guindon Hall, room 4130. The laboratory is equipped with two automatic tissue processor for paraffin processing, microtomes to section paraffin blocks, automatic stainer /coverslipper that can be programmed to provide a wide variety of routine and special stains. Cryostats are also available for the sectioning of frozen tissues for lipid and enzyme demonstration, and for immunohistochemical or immunofluorescence work.
TMA Services
Tissue microarrays are constructed to combines tens to hundreds of specimens of tissue onto a single slide for analysis at one time. Samples may be from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue or alternative fixatives or frozen tissues. Tissue Microarray services are becoming the new trend in facilitating multiple staining of patients or samples to:
- Review single stains done on numerous samples.
- Enables high morphological evaluation throughput without exhausting original sources of tissue.
- A single block can be the object of various histochemical and immunohistochemical studies.
- It opens the door to molecular characterization by immunohistochemistry, and in situ hybridization
-
Numerous morphologic and data analysis studies can be performed
