U101

The Student Federation has done a fabulous job in organizing u101. Events kicked off on Sunday at Confederation Park with a great concert. Enjoy all the terrific activities!

Recteur 101

J’ai commencé mon rectorat à la mi-juillet. Depuis, j’ai visité nos différentes facultés et je me suis assis avec les doyens et leur équipe pour discuter. J’ai aussi passé du temps avec les représentants des étudiants et des médias du campus, dont La Rotonde et The Fulcrum.

Pendant mes cinq premières semaines à Ottawa, j’ai habité en résidence sur le campus en attendant que ma maison soit prête, à la fin août. C’était parfait pour commencer mes nouvelles fonctions et surtout, pour voir le campus du point de vue d’un étudiant!

The Campus Comes Alive!

It is great to see so many students, as they arrive from across the country and around the world. Students are the reason that I took this job. I wanted to be part of the excitement of university life, to be energized by young people. Everything in my experience tells me that at this time, universities are the place to be. It is here that we will prepare our country for the 21st century. I am truly very excited by my job, and by the academic year that lies ahead.

Something Old, Something New…

Being on campus over the summer gave me the chance to walk around and rediscover a place where I spent many years. For me, the campus is a mixture of old and new … of memories and of anticipation.

I was born in Ottawa, and grew up on Blackburn Avenue in Sandy Hill. I spent what now seems like my entire youth on this campus! I started at the age of 13 as a student at the University of Ottawa Preparatory High School, which was located at the time in what is now Tabaret. In fact, my present office is only a few metres away from the location of my grade 9 classroom!

I then spent four years studying at the Faculty of Arts, in what is now the Simard Building. After that, I studied for three years at the Common Law Section of the Law Faculty, which was then located on the 4th Floor of the Simard Building. Eleven years on the same block!

So every corner and every section of the campus brings back memories.

L’avenir

Mais quand je vois le campus de l’Université d’Ottawa, je pense bien plus à l’avenir qu’au passé. Les nouveaux édifices, le développement de notre capacité de recherche et d’enseignement, le sentiment, de plus en plus fort, que nous représentons quelque chose d’unique et de très important : tout ça, c’est très prometteur.

Nous poursuivrons notre croissance, mais à un rythme qui nous permettra de continuer à fournir un enseignement d’excellente qualité et un milieu de recherche de calibre mondial.

Le code de conduite

Je ne peux pas conclure sans vous parler du code de conduite. Comme vous le savez peut-être, ce code, à l’état d’ébauche, a été rendu public en avril dernier dans le but de lancer la discussion. Avec ce document, on voulait établir un cadre qui permettrait de décrire la façon dont chaque membre de la communauté universitaire voulait être traité par les autres. À mon avis, l’ébauche a atteint son objectif : elle a suscité beaucoup de discussions!

I very much want a constructive dialogue to continue. I have therefore encouraged meetings with the Student Federation and the Graduate Students Association, in order to move beyond the Code to talk about various ways in which all members of the University community – students, administrators, staff, and professors – can lay out in clear terms the kind of academic community to which we aspire, and the roles, rights and responsibilities that each of us have in that community. That work will continue with my enthusiastic support.
