The numbers are in: 2024 was officially the hottest year on record at 1.6°C above pre-industrial levels, pushing us closer to the critical 1.5°C threshold. The latest numbers from Copernicus highlight how quickly we are seeing the impact of climate change and therefore the importance of the ongoing energy transition. The challenges are significant, but there are plenty of reasons to stay hopeful: ➡️ Renewable energy costs keep falling, with solar and wind now the most affordable new power sources in most markets. ➡️ Energy storage technologies are advancing rapidly, making our grids more stable and reliable. ➡️ Investment in climate solutions hit a record $1.8 trillion in 2024, showing unprecedented global commitment. ➡️ Innovation is gaining speed across sectors, from transport to heavy industry. There's still much work to do. As the dust settles on COP29, a recent Economist analysis (November 14th) highlights an encouraging trend: the cost of decarbonisation may be significantly lower than predicted - under 1% of global GDP for clean energy transition. The evidence is compelling: economic models have consistently underestimated the pace of technological advancement. Solar deployment in China last year exceeded the world's entire 2015 capacity, while battery and wind technologies continue to break cost barriers. Success now depends on expanding grids, improving storage solutions, and implementing smart grid management. The path forward combines technological innovation with collaborative international deployment to accelerate the global adoption. We are excited to announce that char.gy has secured a landmark contract to partner with Richmond and Wandsworth Councils. In an industry first, char.gy was chosen for our technical expertise to migrate 950 existing on-street charge points into our network, growing it in size by a third. Richmond and Wandsworth Councils, pioneers in the rollout of extensive on-street charging networks, launched a competitive procurement process for network operators to manage the existing infrastructure following the conclusion of their contracts under GULCS. This new and unique capability has enabled char.gy to demonstrate a valuable third option for councils nearing the end of a contract. Councils can now opt for migration instead of renewing and replacing their existing infrastructure, saving time and costs, ensuring service continuity for drivers, and fostering a marketplace that promotes higher service quality. John Lewis, CEO of char.gy, commented, “We are proud to have been chosen by Richmond and Wandsworth councils as a partner to serve EV drivers across these London boroughs. This is an industry first, and it represents a crucial development in the way EV infrastructure can be rolled out.
