🚨The Information Commissioner has backed our call to end salmon farming secrecy in university research. In 2024, an academic paper was published by the University College London in the Journal of Environmental Management which reported on long-term ‘changes’ to the ecology of certain freshwater lochs in Scotland, all of which contain fish farms. Strangely, the paper did not name the lochs... We referred the matter to the Information Commissioner who has issued a formal Decision Notice to University College London requiring it to disclose the identity of the seven lochs 🙌 🔗 Follow the link to learn more and stay tuned for updates including the identity of the lochs in question! https://lnkd.in/eUaTyGEr 🔗 Follow the link to find out more.

🚨 The Environment Agencies storm overflow report for 2024 is out today!! Official data reports even more sewage pollution of rivers. But let’s stop blaming the weather shall we, Environment Agency ? Following our detailed complaint, the Office for Environmental Protection issued you, OFWAT and DEFRA with formal Decision Notices last December, ruling that you, OFWAT and DEFRA had failed to implement a 1994 law on controlling sewage pollution properly. ⚠️ You broke the law. If you hadn’t, and you had made water companies invest properly over the 30 years since then, the rivers would not be full of sewage today. Stop blaming the weather!! 🔗 More here >> https://lnkd.in/eHzdm-7K

NEW on the BLOG >> Some good news for the River Chess in Buckinghamshire 🙌 The Environment Agency is proposing to revoke the licence for abstraction from Chesham Pumping Station, with a promise that there will be no further abstraction from the River Chess. In this blog, Justin Neal explores the river's history of over-exploitation and how a recent decision from the Environment Agency will prevent further risk from abstraction on this under-protected chalk stream. 🔗 Follow the link below to learn more. https://lnkd.in/eg7tgTDF

💧From sewage spills to water shortages, decades of government and regulatory failure have allowed water companies to neglect vital investment in water supply and sewage capacity. The Independent Water Commission will make recommendations to the UK and Welsh Governments to “strengthen the water sector and its regulatory framework” - we want to make sure it puts nature and wild fish first. To do this, our focus will be on how the water sector plans for new developments. Right now, there is no mechanism to ensure new developments have the water and sewage capacity they require and the environment pays the price - this process must change. Follow the link below to respond to the Independent Water Commission and demand that new developments proceed only when the water industry can ensure sustainable water supply and adequate sewage infrastructure. 💙🐟 https://lnkd.in/eV3QZ6_U

Not so appealing… Showing their true colours, Scotland's salmon farming companies have appealed against the Scottish Environment Protection Agency's sea lice regulatory framework, which has been over ten years in the making. Guy Linley-Adams turns the spotlight on salmon farming and the desperate need for stronger regulatory oversight to control the impact of sea lice on wild fish. 🔗 Follow the link to read the blog today. https://lnkd.in/gYtCXGnt

📢 We need your voice to ensure that new development only proceeds when the water industry can provide a sustainable water supply and there is adequate sewage infrastructure. We have nearly all the legislation we need to protect the environment. But, lack of enforcement, poor management and woeful under-investment mean that basic requirements like water supply and sewage treatment come at the expense of our environment. From sewage spills to water shortages, our rivers, lakes, and seas are paying the price, and our wild fish populations are on the frontline. This must change. Follow the link below to act now - your voice can make a difference. ✊ 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eV3QZ6_U
