We often hear about cyber threats to our communications networks—but what about the physical ones? In our latest #CritCommsCircle #podcast episode, Ildefonso de la Cruz and I dive into the often-overlooked topic of physical security for telecommunications infrastructure—the towers, cables, and sites that critical communications rely on. As public safety and emergency services increasingly depend on commercial mobile networks, protecting this infrastructure has never been more important. We’re joined by three experts behind the TCCA’s new white paper on this very subject: Lasantha De Alwis D’Alwis – UK Home Office; Nina Myren – Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection (DSB); and Kari Junttila – Erillisverkot, Finland. Together, we discuss: 📌 Why physical security must be a priority 📌 Challenges of relying on commercial networks 📌 Legal, regulatory, and contractual frameworks 📌 Opportunities for harmonized standards across Europe (and beyond) 📌 The critical—but under-engaged—role of mobile network operators I'd urge listeners to check out the TCCA white paper on this topic for even more detail here.
