Tate & Lyle Sugars Welcomes the Launch of the Universal Sugar Mill List by the Sugar Collaboration Group The launch of the Universal Sugar Mill List (UML) by the Sugar Collaboration Group marks an important step in a collective journey towards a more sustainable sugar supply chain. The UML is a list of approximately 1,000 sugarcane mills and sugar beet factories across sugar-producing countries worldwide, each with its own unique reference number. It will act as a reliable reference, making it easier to identify mills and support the mapping of supply chains in a more efficient and standardised way. We marked International Women’s Day 2025 with a celebration of women working at our company and heard from speakers from different parts of the business who shared their personal stories and accomplishments. One speaker was Ginnel Ozaeta, a sugarcane farmer and employee of the Progressive Sugar Cane Producers Association, a Fairtrade certified producer association in Belize, where we purchase our raw cane sugar. Both awards honour David’s incredible journey - from a childhood curiosity about engineering to achieving success through hard work, determination, and a love for learning, and a true champion for what people with drive can achieve through an apprenticeship. We have been refining raw cane sugar on the banks of the River Thames for over 145 years, so we’ve seen some big challenges and some big changes.   In the 1970s, we made the then ambitious decision to convert our Refinery from coal to natural gas. Now we’re looking to transition once more, as we explore options to cut our carbon emissions.   Unfortunately, it’s simply not possible to do that using electricity alone. To decarbonise our factory, we’ve got to find a way to decarbonise steam production – and electricity can’t do that.    We need to replace natural gas with another gas, like hydrogen. Unlike other technologies, hydrogen could enable us to decarbonise without needing to overhaul whole parts of our factory.   So we’re pleased to be joining several other leading British businesses exploring the potential for hydrogen to decarbonise UK manufacturing, as part of the #MadeWithHydrogen consortium.

We are delighted to share the successful Grantees of the 2024 Lyle’s Local Fund! We received over 110 applications and were delighted to award grants of up to £5,000 to 12 organisations in December 2024. Between them, these organisations support some of the most vulnerable people, both young and old, in our community, and represent the breadth of the brilliant work that is being done across Newham. Running since 2017, the Lyle's Local Fund has awarded over £250,000 to over 110 projects that support safe, prosperous and healthy communities in Newham. We are so proud of our Newham roots and the Lyle’s Local Fund exists to support the very special organisations, projects and people who work hard to make our borough a better place to live and work. Each year, we are blown away by the number and variety of incredible funding applications and decided to double the size of the Fund to £50,000 so we can support more organisations who contribute to making our borough the wonderful place it is. #sustainablyrefined #newham #lyleslocalfund
