About us

The Science and Technology Facilities Council is keeping the UK at the forefront of international science and tackling some of the most significant challenges facing society such as meeting our future energy needs, monitoring and understanding climate change, and global security. The Council has a broad science portfolio and works with the academic and industrial communities to share its expertise in materials science, space and ground-based astronomy technologies, laser science, microelectronics, wafer scale manufacturing, particle and nuclear physics, alternative energy production, radio communications and radar. STFC has 5 main UK sites: Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), Daresbury Laboratory (DL), UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UKATC), Chilbolton Observatory and Boulby Underground Laboratory. STFC operates or hosts world class experimental facilities including: • In the UK; ISIS Neutron and Muon Source, the Central Laser Facility and RAL Space. STFC is also the majority shareholder in Diamond Light Source Ltd. • Overseas; telescopes on La Palma and Hawaii STFC enables UK researchers to access leading international science facilities by funding membership of international bodies including European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN), the Institut Laue Langevin (ILL), European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) and the European Southern Observatory (ESO). STFC is one of seven publicly-funded research councils and is part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). It is an independent, non-departmental public body of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

    How can we know something exists but not know what it is, or what it's made of? The concept of dark matter was initially suggested in the 1930s to account for the gravitational behaviours observed in galaxies. 🌌 Scientists, puzzled by the absence of visible mass needed to hold galactic clusters together, concluded that an unknown substance, termed dark matter, must account for the missing mass.     The power of photobiomodulation! 🚨 🤝 This promising research collaboration between the University of Westminster and our Central Laser Facility demonstrates the potential power of near-infrared light therapy. Results showed that, in an experimental setting, it can selectively halt cancer cell division without harming healthy tissue, which could pave the way to a more targeted and non-invasive approach with the potential to revolutionise cancer treatment! 🧫 #CancerBreakthrough #STFC #CLF #CellularBiology

    👩🔬 How can near-infrared (NIR) light be used to halt cancer without harming healthy cells? Researchers from the University of Westminster and the Central Laser Facility have found that NIR light therapy can selectively stop cancer cells from dividing, while leaving normal cells unaffected. This technique, known as photobiomodulation (PBM), uses low-level NIR light to trigger beneficial cellular changes. The research team exposed both healthy and cancerous cells to daily 20-minute NIR light sessions for a week. The result? Only the cancer cells entered senescence—a state where they can no longer divide—while healthy cells continued to function normally. Work from teams in our nuclear physics group are helping to deliver two of these projects including: 📈 Lightweight and affordable digitiser technology for installation on drones 🎯 Target design and production for reaction studies 🔭 AI technology for the delivery and maintenance of telescopes and astronomical instruments Through knowledge exchange and technical contributions, these projects have the potential to foster stronger ties between the UK and South Africa and advance scientific endeavours overseas.

    Fragmented knowledge slows progress. That's why, as part of our long-standing partnership with India's Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) Hyderabad, EPIC was born. 🌏 Part-funded by the ISPF, EPIC will play a crucial role in advancing laser-driven accelerator technology.     The knowledge surrounding laser-driven accelerator technology is currently fragmented. Research in this next-generation technology is essential to achieve significant breakthroughs and address complex global challenges. However, access to these advanced facilities can be difficult. The Extreme Photonics Innovation Centre (EPIC) is a collaborative project based on a long-standing collaboration between the UK's STFC and India's TIFR. Its mission is to develop control systems for high-power lasers in the future. EPIC aims to advance novel accelerator technology and explore the exciting potential applications of laser-driven accelerators across various fields, including industry, engineering, science, medicine, and advanced materials.
