  • It was a pleasure to host a financial education session at Smart Pension's London offices last night for #MakingtheLeap's Future Ambassadors Program. It's never too early to start thinking about saving for retirement, and it was great to see this motivated group of young people engaging with the topic. A big thank you to everyone involved!

In the pensions industry we talk a lot about adequacy in retirement and how to improve member engagement so tonight it was an honour to host a financial education session for #MakingtheLeap’s Future Ambassadors Program and talk about how to manage personal finances and - as these ambitious young people start out in their careers - about the importance of saving early for retirement. A huge thank you to all the group for participating so enthusiastically, sharing your stories and contributing to a fun and engaging evening! A big thank you to my fellow colleagues at #SmartPension for supporting the event too: Darja O'Keefe Alex Arundale Becky Procter Zsuzsanna Szucs and a big shout out to Gabriela J. for working her magic on creating a fantastic presentation deck!

Whilst most of us might only like traffic lights when they're green (yep, definitely me🙋♀️), I'm hoping this morning's PASA conference panel prompted our audience to consider why amber and red might have a role to play in the world of VFM. Fascinating insights and thoughts from my fellow panel members included Mike Ambery's "we don't want every scheme to be green as it means we're not taking the opportunity to creating positive change" and Sophia Singleton's "consistency of approach between regulators is important" (shoddy paraphrasing all my own work). A few takeaways from my perspective: 📈 there is risk that given the quantitative nature of the investment metrics that performance becomes a very dominant driver and improvements in support and administrative services don't receive enough focus 📊 EBCs carry great responsibility in using the outputs of VfM to ensure that there is an appropriate and balanced focus on measures which are most likely to produce strong member outcomes 🚦perhaps we need to straddle the chasm between the c500 measures and the (overly) simplistic RAG status with a short summary which draws out the key metrics that are most likely to align with positive impact for members? In summary, we all agreed that this will produce improvements in member outcomes. Thanks to Jessica Rigby FPMI for superbly and unflappably chairing the panel session and PASA - Pensions Administration Standards Association CIC for inviting me to join the panel. I'm sure there will be plenty more discussion to come on this topic as it develops further!

  • “I like traffic lights, but only when they’re green.” – Monty Python. When it comes to DC value reporting, red and amber ratings are just as important. The Financial Conduct Authority's 2024 VFM Consultation introduces a RAG rating framework that goes beyond investment performance and costs, incorporating service quality metrics. But what does this mean for schemes, providers, and the wider DC market? Smart Pension’s Senior Director of Strategic Delivery Eve Read, will be at the PASA annual conference discussing how value for money is more than just costs and charges today.
