When Sharon Terry’s children were diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder, she didn’t wait for answers—she went out and found them. From learning genetics from scratch to co-discovering the PXE gene, building the first patient-led biobank, and helping pass the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA), Sharon’s journey is one of resilience, innovation, and advocacy. In a recent episode of The Genetics Podcast, we chat with Sharon to explore: 🔬 How patient-led research is changing biobanking and drug development ⚖️ The challenges of balancing industry partnerships with patient rights 🌍 Why global initiatives like IHOPE Genetic Health are crucial for underserved communities 📜 Whether GINA still protects patients in today’s world of widespread genetic testing A summary and the full episode are available on-demand now👇 https://lnkd.in/ekpSgDtw #Genetics #RareDisease #PatientAdvocacy #PrecisionMedicine

I had the pleasure of speaking with Rory Cellan-Jones after an introduction from a colleague, and the conversation turned into a beautifully written post on Rory's newsletter, "Always On" focussed on technology and health. I offered my perspective on genetic testing in Parkinson's Disease, and also how my own family experience with genetic testing in kidney disease has shaped my worldview. Anyone interested in technology, health, or Parkinson's Disease i'd highly encourage you to check it out and subscribe! https://lnkd.in/dsVS26d8

Wrapping up a few days of in-person team meetings with the leadership and extended-leadership teams from Sano Genetics. I love the flexibility of remote work, but also value the time together so much. Between meetings and dinner we squeezed in some time to visit the TWIST (The Way I See iT) Museum. It was an hour well spent to remind us all that solving big problems is challenging, but we are fortunate to work with a group that is smart and creative enough to take on the big challenges and to remember that no issue is as black and white as it seems at first glance. Thanks to the team for adding some color into my week and to Mina Frost for planning a delightful evening! Next stops in Q2 include: ⚫ World Orphan Drug Congress (Boston April 22-24) ⚫ Global Clinical Supply Group (San Antonio April 28-30) ⚫ PPALS (Sioux Falls May 5-9) ⚫ Day trips for meetings in Philadelphia and NYC If you will be at any of those events and would like to meet, send me a note!

Hearing loss is the most common sensory condition in the world, yet for many, treatment options remain limited. While advances in precision medicine such as gene therapy and precision medicine offer hope, barriers such as cost, accessibility, and ethical concerns must be addressed. 💰The cost of developing a gene therapy can exceed $1.9 billion 👂50%+ of severe genetic hearing loss cases are linked to just two genes, yet therapies remain elusive ⚖️Equitable access is a major challenge, with many affected communities underserved At the same time, Deaf culture plays an essential role in the discussion around genetic hearing loss treatment. How do we balance medical advancements with respect for identity and inclusivity? Read more👇 https://lnkd.in/euJGjsUt #GeneTherapy #HearingLoss #PrecisionMedicine #Genomics #Healthcare

What if the next breakthrough drug target isn’t in the known proteome—but in the thousands of hidden proteins we’ve yet to study? 🔬 That’s the question driving ProFound Therapeutics, a company uncovering an entirely new layer of biology: the expanded human proteome. Using advanced ribosome profiling (Ribo-Seq), they are identifying previously unknown proteins that could hold the key to new treatments for cancer, metabolic disease, and more. We talked to CEO Dr. John Lepore about why and how this might be the future of drug discovery on a recent episode of The Genetics Podcast.
