A conference titled ‘Units, Symbols, and Terminology in the Physical Sciences in and for the Digital Era’ took place at the Royal Society of Chemistry, Burlington House, London in March 2025. It was organised by a dedicated team from the University of Southampton UK, and was supported by the Physical Sciences Data Infrastructure (PSDI) project. The event successfully brought together distinguished scientists and experts from the UK and around the world, many affiliated with the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), to address the challenge of updating scientific nomenclature and terminology for the digital age. It was opened by welcoming remarks from Prof. Jeremy Frey (University of Southampton, UK) and Dr. Helen Pain (CEO of Royal Society of Chemistry, UK) and featured representatives from several projects and organisations, including: PSDI (Physical Sciences Data Infrastructure) CODATA DRUM Task Group (Digital Representation of Units of Measure) IUPAC Green Book (Quantities, Units, and Symbols in Physical Chemistry) IUPAC Gold Book (Compendium of Chemical Terminology) The conference included plenary talks covering a wide range of topics, including the Philosophy of Chemistry, Metadata, and the use of the Semantic Web in Science. Additionally, collaborative sessions provided participants with opportunities to address their current issues, compare notes with other projects, and identify common agendas. Many thanks to the organisers from the University of Southampton and PSDI, particularly Prof. Jeremy Frey, Victoria Hooper, and Dr. Samantha Pearman-Kanza, PhD. Important mention in the latest BBC News story from Jersey, highlighting our campaigning work on the critical issue of PFAS contamination in the UK. Our recent survey revealed that 89% of the UK public considers it very important to effectively control PFAS levels in food, drinking water, and the environment. Additionally, 74% believe that chemical manufacturers should bear the primary responsibility for reducing PFAS levels. These findings underscore the urgent need for collaborative efforts among policymakers, industry leaders, and the scientific community to address PFAS pollution. At the Royal Society of Chemistry, we are committed to advancing research and policies that promote a safer, more sustainable future.
