Rolls-Royce SMR has submitted its final tender to Great British Nuclear at the end of a six-month period of detailed negotiations on deploying SMRs in the UK. A successful outcome for the home-grown technology will be transformational for the UK – immediately unlocking supply chain investment, creating thousands of long-term high-skilled jobs and generating enormous opportunities for growth.  Chris Cholerton, Rolls-Royce SMR Chief Executive, said: “I am grateful for the concerted effort from everyone at Rolls-Royce SMR who has contributed to our submission. Continued success for Rolls-Royce SMR Nuclear Reactor Course A second cohort has successfully completed the intensive full-time nuclear reactor course, run by the US nuclear utility Constellation Energy Generation. The 4-week course comprises an intensive series of technical training modules, covering critical aspects of nuclear plant design and operation. The syllabus is a development of the course used by the utility to certify engineers, and prepare individuals for operational training at their nuclear power stations. Paul Howdle, Rolls-Royce SMR’s Head of Engineering Capability, commented: “I’m thrilled the second ‘Constellation Diploma’ course has yet again provided such excellent results, and has further consolidated our close relationship with Constellation. Moreover, the opportunity for Rolls-Royce SMR to jointly engage with Constellation to refine the course offering has been a tremendous example of teamwork. All colleagues in the second cohort have grasped the opportunity and have excelled, continuing to show the enthusiasm, talent and commitment within our engineering function. I warmly congratulate all involved for a first-rate sequel". Rolls Royce SMR technology (Small Modular Reactors) in the UK - clean energy - net zero   Thank you to Rolls Royce and University of Sheffield AMRC (Advanced Manufacturing and Research Centre) for the welcome, tour and exciting insights into top research and manufacturing in the field of energy and climate. Thank you Alan Pardoe, manufacturing manager, for the detailed explanations and tour, Professor Harry Burroughes of AMRC Sheffield University and Sebastian Russell-Smith, Manager for Government Affairs at Rolls Royce.   SMR The SMR approach (small modular reactors) is a novel approach in nuclear energy production and is an answer to ever growing complexities of traditional nuclear power plants and growing costs. It uses smaller units which need less space and are pre-fabricated off site in manufacturing facilities in small modular units that can easily be transported by road or rail. The production is standardized for each unit which requires high-class engineering during preparation and many top manufacturing jobs. SMR provide between 20-300 megawatts, use a fraction of the traditional space and can run 60 years without refueling.   In 2024 Rolls Royce signed a cooperation department with CEZ in the Chech Republic to deliver SMR to Chechia and develop a production site and manufacturing jobs. Rolls-Royce SMR have entered into a partnership agreement with Energy technology firm Siemens Energy that is expected to lead to the exclusive supply of conventional technology for future Small Modular Reactors (SMR).   Siemens Energy is to be the supplier of steam turbines, generators, and other auxiliary systems for the British manufacturer's planned Generation 3+ modular nuclear power plants. The final contract is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.   Energy Secretary Ed Milliband has outlined the strategy of the government. “Clean energy is the route to energy security, lower bills, good jobs and a safe climate for our children and grandchildren… new technologies such as small modular reactors off huge potential to deliver clean, homegrown energy for families and businesses.”  British Prime Minister vowed to go beyond the current 8 planning sites and use his majority in Parliament, as he told i-paper.   The challenge of the transformation is a balance between sustainability, energy security and affordability. A higher cost-efficiency can save many billions. So far the costs of the energy transition were high and the effects on global emission reductions low. It is time to review all approaches and find better ways, using market mechanisms and innovation. The awards, organised by the National Skills Academy for Nuclear (NSAN) and Cogent Skills, recognise outstanding achievements in skills development across the nuclear sector. Graeme reflected on the win, saying: “I was convinced I wasn’t going to win, so I think it was obvious how shocked I was! Supported by our Ability Inclusion Network, we have been recognising Neurodiversity Celebration Week. NDCW is a global initiative that challenges stereotypes and misconceptions about neurological differences. Earlier in the week, we were delighted to be joined by Alanna Downing, Co-Founder of Enable Nuclear. Alanna inspired us all with her personal story and the work she has done to help make the nuclear sector more neuro inclusive. While we’ve made positive progress over recent years, we remain passionate about collaborating with organisations like Enable Nuclear to ensure that not just Rolls-Royce SMR but the nuclear sector as a whole is fully inclusive of everyone. Gavin Jones, Network Lead for Ability, told us: “As someone diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD, I recognise the need to ensure that our neurodivergent colleagues can have their voice heard so that together we can make an even more inclusive nuclear sector. It’s also important that we have visibility and that we uplift role models, and I can think of few people better at doing this than Alanna. She demonstrates very clearly that neurodiversity is not a barrier but, when supported, it is an advantage. Rolls-Royce SMR was delighted to host a U.S. delegation to its Module Development Facility at the The University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre’s Factory 2050 recently. Delegates from State Utility Commissions of Florida, Washington, Virginia as well as Utah, and Indiana Office of Energy Development heard how Rolls-Royce SMR’s ‘factory-built’ nuclear power plant uses a modularised construction and assembly approach to reduce the time and cost of SMR deployment around the globe for a range of applications. Harry Keeling, Rolls-Royce SMR’s Head of Business Development – New Markets said: “Rolls-Royce SMR is unique in that the entirety of the plant is manufactured as modules within our factories, before the modules are assembled at the relevant sites into an operational SMRs. Our facility at the UK’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre is crucial in proving this deployment model and it was our pleasure to host this important visit and to discuss how our SMR could be manufactured and deployed in North America.” Andrew Baker, VP Government Relations at Rolls-Royce North America, said: “Building on our vision to manufacture and deploy 60 Hz Rolls-Royce SMRs in the U.S., the visit was an extremely productive opportunity to further our engagements with key states and showcase our innovative technology.
