Advertisements tell us so much about the latest in modernity of a particular time. In 1958, thus was the most up-to-date television available - and represented the height of elegance in the home. The décor is very much of its time, too. #history #richardrobertsarchive #printadvertising

About us
Richard Roberts Archive is a collection of print advertising covering industries such as motoring, aviation, cycling, lifestyle, fashion and textiles. Our aim is to preserve, and to make available for academic research, print advertising of any products in any language and from any period. The historic and cultural value of such material is enormous: the wording and images of advertising have always depicted the essence of what advertisers want to say about the quality of their product.

This striking image from 1938 displays the epitome of modern style - in a very Scottish form. Dogs are often used to illustrate understated power and intelligence, and here they complement the image beautifully. #history #richardrobertsarchive #printadvertising

This delightful advertisement from 1954 is a superb example of an advertising 'trick' used many times over the years: make children do grown-up things. It works. #history #richardrobertsarchive #advertisement #archive #historypreserved #printadvertising

Advertising is a rich source for historical research. This 1937 advertisement by the fashion house Jenners not only shows that year's country wear for fashionable ladies - sending on approval and pricing in guineas are social pointers too. #history #richardrobertsarchive #advertisement #archive #historypreserved #printadvertising

Jacob's followed the trend to photography here in 1958 - but the copy has a subtle but enticing impact. Who wouldn't spread butter on a Jacob's cracker? #history #richardrobertsarchive #advertisement #archive #historypreserved #printadvertising

The fashions of 1956 are not those of 2025. This Ideal Standard advertisement gives a fascinating insight into what was considered ultra-modern in that year. #history #richardrobertsarchive #printadvertising
