>50% of Poland’s energy mix came from coal in 2024. Poland’s Ministry of Industry are leading the country to a future beyond coal reliance. Poland's second nuclear power plant will be built in the location of one of these four existing sites of major coal-fired power generation: Bełchatów Konin Kozienice Połaniec Reusing existing infrastructure, grid connections, and local expertise is the smart way to replace coal power with clean technology. These 2 nuclear plants will add 6-9GW of energy production capacity by 2042. For many years, the Coal-to-Nuclear pathway has been analysed and promoted in Poland by Repower Initiative's partners - DEsire - Platforma Transformacji Energetyki, which is led by Lukasz Bartela from the Silesian University of Technology. The DEsire team have been advancing the C2N pathway through publications, panel discussions, and hundreds of conversations with experts and decision-makers. We are working on one of the largest carbon reduction opportunities on the planet. Repower is a global non-profit initiative helping to accelerate the transition of hundreds of coal power plants assets globally into cleaner energy sources. The initiative is led by Quantified Carbon, an international consultancy firm providing complex problem solving, modelling, and optimisation to support decarbonisation of energy systems and industries. Our focus is to enable techno-economic and policy research on Coal Repowering at scale, by partnering with leading researchers and technology providers all over the world. Our long-term aim is to help accelerate the transition of around 1300 new coal power plant assets to cleaner energy sources, while saving trillions of dollars and ensuring a just workforce transition. By removing the coal and keeping the power we can eliminate the source of almost one third of global carbon emissions and help avoid up to 200 gigatons of otherwise committed carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Konferencja "Od węgla do atomu. Bełchatów przyszłości", która odbyła się 28 marca w Bełchatowie, zgromadziła około 1000 osób, a wśród nich pracowników lokalnej elektrowni oraz kopalni węgla brunatnego, dla których przyszłość energetyki zawodowej, nierozerwalnie związanej z regionem, jest sprawą niebywale istotną. Wśród zaproszonych gości znaleźli się samorządowcy, przedstawiciele strony rządowej, przedstawiciele zarządów PGE S.A. oraz PGE GiEK S.A., przedstawiciele związków zawodowych i naukowcy reprezentujący krajowe uczelnie oraz instytuty badawcze. O potencjale lokalizacji bełchatowskiej, która zgodnie z zapowiedziami Ministerstwa Przemysłu znajdzie się po aktualizacji PPEJ na krótkiej liście lokalizacji potencjalnie przewidzianych dla drugiej inwestycji jądrowej w Polsce, rozmawiano w czterech panelach dyskusyjnych. Zaproszenie do udziału w Panelu I pt. "Czy polska energetyka poradzi sobie bez atomu? After successfully opening and integrating nuclear energy into the national energy policy, I am thrilled to announce the upcoming launch of the "Repower Indonesia Initiatives" in collaboration with the ITB Directorate of Research and Innovation. This will be my next challenge. This initiative will pave the way for transitioning coal power plants into cleaner energy systems by replacing their heat sources with nuclear reactors, geothermal energy, or thermal energy storage. Our team have successfully included the "Repowering" in the soon-to-be-released National Energy Policy and the recently published National Electricity Plan (RUKN), under the terms "retrofitting coal plants" and "fuel switching." This initiative is part of a global collaboration with the World Repower Initiative, led by Quantified Carbon. Where currently there are 6 countries participating. As a case study, we have examined the Repower potential of Tanjung Jati B Unit 1, a 600MW coal fired power plant in Jepara. Stakeholders such as PLN and the Ministry of Energy (MoE) are enthusiastic about the prospect transforming coal plant into clean energy and extending the life cycle of power plants rather than shutting them down entirely. We estimate that at least 30 GW of coal power plant capacity across Indonesia by 2035 could be repowered into clean energy systems, if successful then this initiative would be the single largest carbon reduction initiatives in Indonesia marking a significant step towards Indonesia cleaner energy future.
