It was a pleasure to be invited to be the keynote speaker at the Equal in STEM conference today at the University of Birmingham. The topic was the importance of community and diversity in STEM. My message to the students was simple: - Work to create relaxed workspaces, which allow us to be most creative. - Bring your humanity, personality and compassion when solving problems, coupled with your logical brain. - Build teams where every individual feels comfortable and confident to contribute. We were also treated to brilliant panel discussions, talking about ways of improving inclusivity, building cultures of belonging, and what we can do to champion these initiatives. The problem was also laid bare - ten years ago, studies showed a loss of £11.2 billion for the UK economy due to lack of inclusion and diversity. Morality aside, it makes for sobering reading!
