Hats off to London Luton Airport getting the go-ahead for its #capacity increase! The UK government has approved the development consent order to enable LLA to increase its annual passenger capacity from 19 million to 32 million passengers.   Alberto Martin, CEO of London Luton Airport, said, “We welcome today’s approval from the government, which now provides Luton with a generational opportunity to transform the town and our region’s economy. Once complete, these plans will generate an additional £1.5bn [US$1.9bn] for the economy every year and create up to 11,000 jobs." “Airports have a significant opportunity on their doorstep to reduce carbon emissions while alleviating substantial financial pressures" So says Damian Baker, managing director of renewable energy company RenEnergy UK, which has identified 203,705 spaces across 144 airports in England and Scotland that could be fitted with canopies holding #solar PV panels. If all were used, they could generate 188.4GWh of energy – enough to power 52,340 homes annually. Baker also said, “As one of the hardest industries to #decarbonize, aviation faces significant challenges in reducing #carbonemissions. However, many airports overlook the potential that’s sitting right in their car parks.
