What did mapping Britain look like nearly 90 years ago? 🔍 18 April 1936 marked the birth of the iconic trig pillar - a team of surveyors gathered around a concrete pillar in a field in Cold Ashby, and began the retriangulation of Great Britain. Trigs were a vital part of one of the most ambitious mapping project in history, and are now a beloved feature of our landscape. #TrigWeek

Happy 89th birthday to the trig pillar! 🎂 First installed in 1936, trig pillars have played a vital role in mapping Great Britain and remain a much-loved feature of our countryside. We've also recently used OS open data to recreate Great Britain in Minecraft. The new immersive world was built using over 100 billion blocks - bringing real-world geography into the hands of gamers: https://ow.ly/wvsn50VCrex

Ever wondered what's inside a trig pillar? 💡 Built in the 1930's, these concrete pillars helped OS map Great Britain with incredible accuracy, using triangulation. Once vital to surveying, they've now become iconic landmarks for walkers and map-lovers alike. #TrigWeek
