📢 **Call for Contributors for the #WSHPDR2025** 📢 I'm honoured to be part of the Advisory Board for the upcoming World Small Hydropower Development Report 2025, a flagship publication coordinated by UNIDO and International Center on Small Hydro Power (ICSHP) that aims to foster the development of sustainable #smallhydropower worldwide. This is a call for contributors among my network to help shape this renowned global reference in the sector. #WSHPDR The team is currently looking for experts and practitioners in small #hydropower to contribute to country-level chapters for the 2025 edition. If you have experience in SHP policy, climate impacts, implementation, or research I highly encourage you to reach out. 👉📧 Some specific countries still need expert coverage. 🇧🇷 What a powerful coincidence! just as we return from Brazil, we hear the exciting news that the #EarthshotPrize 2025 ceremony will be held in Rio de Janeiro! 🤩 Brazil, one of the world's richest countries in freshwater resources and a global leader in environmental stewardship, is the ideal location to host an event that champions climate innovation. 🌱💧 Over the past few weeks, we’ve been meeting with incredible stakeholders across the Brazilian #hydropower sector to empower them in their climate mitigation efforts with our #lowcarbon label. 🌿 The fact that the #Earthshot Prize is coming to Brazil is a recognition that this country can lead the way in solving the climate crisis through innovation, collaboration, and the power of nature. We’re proud to be working on the ground to support this transformation, and we look forward to seeing what this momentum brings next. Held in the vibrant city of São Paulo, where skyscrapers dominate the skyline and helicopters buzz overhead, the event brought together leading energy utility companies committed to transparency, disclosure, and sustainability in the electricity sector. 🏅💧At Open Hydro, we share these values and are proud to support initiatives that ensure credible and verifiable environmental claims in #RenewableEnergy including #hydropower. The rising demand for clean energy certifications reinforces the importance of robust systems like I-REC, which empower consumers to track and verify the origin of their electricity with confidence. 🇧🇷💧 Our time in Brasília has come to an end, and we made fantastic new contacts; we met with long-time friends and experienced an incredible culture so close to those of our co-founders. We are incredibly grateful to have participated in the 8th National Conference of PCHs and CGHs #8CNPC, an event that brought together industry leaders, innovators, and policymakers shaping the future of small #hydropower in #Brazil. A huge thank you to ABRAPCH - Associação Brasileira de PCHs e CGHs for making us feel so welcome. The openness, inclusivity, and collaboration within the Brazilian hydropower community resonate deeply with our values at Open Hydro. Over the past few days, we had the privilege of engaging with over 30 companies, learning about new technologies, policies, and market trends, and exchanging insights on the role of hydropower in a sustainable energy transition. Key takeaways from the conference: 🔹 The growing positive outlook for the PCHs and CGHs market, particularly in distributed generation and their role in Brazil’s energy mix. 🔹 A fascinating discussion on #pumpedstorage hydropower vs. batteries, with Antonio Harley Anselmo, Msc highlighting key comparisons and opportunities. 🔹 The impact of climate change on hydropower, with Jader Fernandes from Eletrobras sharing insights on their adaptation strategies. 🔹 A deeper understanding of Brazil’s evolving #carbonmarket, thanks to Julia Heidrich Sagaz’s presentation. 💚We are in Brasilia! 💛 We’ve just arrived for the 8th National Conference of PCHs and CGHs, organized by ABRAPCH - Associação Brasileira de PCHs e CGHs, and we’re already feeling the incredible warmth and energy of the Brazilian community. As we landed we had a breathtaking aerial view of the immense Lago Corumbá IV, a reservoir with an installed hydropower capacity of 127 MW—a reminder of the power and potential of water in driving development. Throughout March, our Emerging Companies practice is shining a spotlight on the UKs venture capital gender funding gap by raising awareness of the issue whilst also celebrating successful female business owners to inspire female entrepreneurs and investors. 🎤I was privileged to join a thought-provoking panel on #EarthObservation Science and Big Data, expertly organised by BlueTech Research at the Digital World Stage at Aquatech Amsterdam. 🛰️ Following an insightful presentation by Kim Wu, we dove into the key challenges and opportunities of digital innovation using satellite data in the water sector: 🔹 Trust on new technologies – how can we overcome resistance? 🔹 Data availability & accuracy – ensuring reliable insights for decision-making. 🔹 Cybersecurity risks – safeguarding sensitive data. 🔹 AI advancements – unlocking new possibilities for predictive analytics. It was fantastic to share insights from our work alongside brilliant colleagues like Yonatan Rabinovitch (ASTERRA) and Paolo Tamagnone, PhD (RSS-Hydro). We were privileged to attend the Aquatech Innovation Forum, a one-day interactive conference that brought together some of the most forward-thinking organisations in the water sector. This event was not just another conference; it was a dynamic, interactive experience where audience engagement was a must! 💧💦 We were fascinated by the #watertech startups paving the way for new business models aimed at scaling impact in the water industry while addressing #climatechange. Be it CREW Carbon for carbon removal from wastewater treatment, HOPE Hydration providing free drinking stations, or Puraffinity's solution transforming PFAS removal. We are proud to share our journey with some of these incredible companies as part of the Imagine H2O accelerator cohort. Well done to Joachim Katchinoff and Henrik Hagemann! The I-REC Day Brazil, the country's largest Renewable Energy Certificate event, returns for its 3rd edition to consolidate the opportunities I-REC certificates offer in the Brazilian energy market.
