Updates

  • 🏗️ Over the last year, our site on The Avenue has undergone extensive redevelopment, thanks to a grant from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport's Youth Investment Fund. The buildings have been brightened up and new spaces for young people have been created, including an open-access drop-in which will be opening later this year. Our new counselling suite at The Avenue has been designed to be trauma-informed and accessible. There is also a separate hub building in the garden - The Treehouse - which will be used for young people's groups. The Treehouse and two conference-style rooms in our building will be available for hire by organisations and community groups in the future. Our Advice Centre drop-in has also had a revamp to match the warm welcome young people receive from staff. A huge thank you to every single person who has helped us make all of this happen! 🔗 Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/eNWWxBys

  • 🚉 A big thank you to Southern Renewals Enterprise for inviting us along to their all staff day last week at the Leonardo Hotel, St Paul's, to talk to them about what we do. We were there with four other charities, each chosen for one of the SRE regions and we are pleased to be their Wessex region chosen charity! 🤝 We will be working with them over the next five years through volunteering, challenge events and more.

Almost a million young people are not in work or education and we have heard directly from them that this is both a cause and consequence of poor mental health. Today we launch our pioneering new programme to break the cycle of poor mental health and unemployment for young people. Good Work for Young People’s Mental Health launches today in partnership with three trusted, expert community organisations - 42nd Street Charity, No Limits and MAP Youth Charity to remove barriers young people face and support them to secure meaningful employment opportunities. In a pioneering approach, these young people’s mental health organisations will embed specialist employment support (known as Individual Placement and Support - IPS) into their practice for the first time, creating new pathways to good work. The programme has a significant potential for a cost effective roll out across the country to support many more young people and will be evaluated by NIHR School for Public Health Research. Those aged 16-34 with a mental health condition are almost five times more likely to be economically inactive than their peers without a mental health condition. This puts them at greater risk of living in poor health over the course of their lifetimes and of living in long-term poverty. People’s Health Trust believes every young person deserves a good start to their adult life no matter who they are or where they are from. That’s why we’re funding charities in Manchester, Norwich and Southampton to support young people experiencing social and economic disadvantage in these cities into good quality work. Working alongside our partners, charities supporting young people with  mental health problems, to help young people into secure and meaningful work we are responding to the significant need to break the cycle of poor mental health and unemployment for young people. Young people Fiona, Warith and Grace reflect on their experience of receiving support at member services Young Person's Advisory Service, MAP Youth Charity and No Limits and the blueprint for Young Futures hubs 📘💭👇 Young Futures hubs should support young people to meet their potential, regardless of their background, troubles, or aims. As a group of young people from across the country, we are recommending the model for hubs that has been outlined in this blueprint based on our own experiences of accessing services. We should have equal access to services that are flexible, feel safe, and have been co-designed with us. Young Futures hubs must reflect young people’s needs at a most basic level and uphold our rights as set out in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) (United Nations, 1989). This includes involving young people in these decisions that directly impact us. In this blueprint, you will find two charters that have been co-produced by young people, which demonstrate how participation can be carried out successfully with them in order to create services that are relevant to them. Young people, experts by experience, should not be taken for granted in how much they know or trivialised when they are involved. The whole point of the Young Futures programme is to help us, so how can that be done without listening to what we say? The world right now feels unfamiliar, hostile, and too fast-paced for even the best of us to cope. We are lost and sometimes alone, and the Hub model set out in this blueprint is just what most of us need. Have a housing problem? Hubs have connections to the local authorities and agencies. Have a mental health issue? Hubs welcome you into their many mental health support services. And on it goes. The Government spends billions of pounds on public services trying to rebuild young people’s lives after they reach crisis. In comparison, where these hubs already exist, they cost little yet do so much for us and thousands of young eople around the country – people who will go on to work, pursue education and train for a career. The Government needs us now more than ever; we need not mention the socio-economic situation to stress the importance of providing the proper support for us now. Investing in hubs is an investment in our future. Work with us to build a positive and healthy future, or we may not see it. Young people, your future voters, will remember the choices you make. We are a trio of passionate young people from starkly different backgrounds. Each of us has goals, hopes, and dreams. None of this would have been possible without the excellent support of our local hubs. Support that must be available for every young person wherever they live. • Young people tell us that equal access to flexible, safe and co-designed community services are what they need in this ever changing world. That's why we're supporting the #FundtheHubsblueprint which sets out a roadmap on the development and implementation of Young Futures hubs. The campaign have recommend that the Government should: 👉Commit to a multi-year funding package for roll out in the upcoming Spending Review 👉Carry out a comprehensive cross government consultation on delivering open access support for children and young people 👉Take a cross departmental approach throughout the programme’s development 👉Develop joint commissioning guidance for local areas on implementation 👉Design a clear and consistent outcomes framework with existing hub providers 👉Set out a workforce development plan to support the roll out 👉Implement a learning and quality practice mechanism to support continuous development Read more: https://lnkd.in/efUsCzQe futures-hubs/
