I don’t post here as often as I’d like, but today, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on my journey with Mental Health Innovations, as I’ve just reached a milestone that means a great deal to me.
My journey began in 2019 when I came across press interviews with the Prince and Princess of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who spoke passionately about Shout and their mission to transform mental health support across the UK. Their words resonated deeply with me, and I knew immediately that I wanted to be part of this movement. Without hesitation, I signed up, completed my training, and began my voluntary work as a Shout Volunteer, providing text-based support to those in crisis.
By 2021, I had progressed to Level 7 or 8 as a volunteer when I made the decision to apply for a Clinical Practitioner role. At the time, I was training to become a counsellor, and this opportunity allowed me to take on more responsibilities, deepening my experience in crisis support. I found immense fulfilment in the role, gaining invaluable insights into providing immediate support to people in distress.
After qualifying as a counsellor, there was no question in my mind that I wanted to continue my journey with Shout. For me, this work has never been just a stepping stone—it’s a core part of who I am and the practitioner I aspire to be. The impact we make, the lives we touch, and the support we offer in those critical moments continue to drive my passion for this field.
Last year, I transitioned into a Qualified Practitioner role, which has only reinforced my commitment to this work. While my responsibilities have evolved, one thing has remained constant: my dedication to one-on-one support with texters. Being there for someone in their moment of need, offering them a safe space to talk, and helping them navigate their crisis is the heart of what I do, and it’s what I value most.
Today, I’m incredibly proud to share that I have reached a major milestone—over 10,000 conversations. Each one represents a moment of connection, a person who reached out in distress, and a reminder of why this work matters. It’s an achievement that reflects not just my journey, but the strength and courage of every texter who has trusted me with their thoughts and feelings.
I’m grateful for everything I’ve learned, for the team that makes this work possible, and for the opportunity to continue making a difference. Here’s to many more conversations and the ongoing mission of providing accessible, life-changing mental health support.
Thank you very much to Mental Health Innovations, Michael Kitching and everyone that has supported me on this journey. There are too many to mention but thank you all.
Voluntary work is important and it can change your life in so many ways you never thought possible. Why not think about volunteering with Shout or another charity and invest in not only helping others but yourself too
