Mental Health Care

A charity using pioneering technology to improve mental health in the UK

About us

Mental Health Innovations is a charity providing early intervention, preventative care and crisis support through digital services. It was founded in 2017 with the support of the Royal Foundation of The Prince and Princess of Wales. Through our unique data insight and research, clinical expertise, innovation and partnerships, we work on focus areas where our expertise enables us to have a positive outcome on the mental health of the UK population. We power Shout, the UK's only free, 24/7 text message support service and The Mix, which provides free, anonymous online support with the important issues in young people’s lives. We place young people at the heart of the solution as service co-creators and volunteers, giving them the mental health skills to use in the wider community and to find and retain employment.

We spend a lot of our lives online. While there are certain benefits such as connecting with others, seeing updates from friends and family, and learning new things, we can find ourselves comparing our lives to others, 'doomscrolling', in situations that don't feel comfortable or simply spending too much time online. On our website you'll find resources that can help provide tips and support if you're starting to find you or your child's mental health and wellbeing is being impacted by social media and being online. We're here to support you https://bit.ly/3FReNuF

  • We're delighted to announce Flat Iron Fund as our first corporate sponsor for Mental Health Awareness Week! Flat Iron launched their charitable fund in 2018, raising money from optional guest donations, with a focus on health related charities that complement and support the vital work of the NHS. At Mental Health Innovations, we provide early intervention, preventative care, and crisis support through digital services, supporting the work of the NHS. Their generous donation will sponsor the Shout UK platform for one day, providing free, confidential crisis text support, helping people across the UK with issues such as anxiety and depression. Thank you so much for your support. If you're interested in sponsoring Shout during Mental Health Awareness Week please contact Rosie Martin, Senior Corporate Partnerships Manager, rosie.martin@mhiuk.org

Thank you to the National Youth Agency for inviting Mental Health Innovations today to their launch of the Digital Youth Work Standards, I know I throughly enjoyed my time. (31st March 2025) The event was absolutely incredible as I sat on a panel with my fellow MHI Youth Board Member, Amelia Shipton, where we discussed how important that the youth sector and organisations that are involved with young people is to the accessibility, growth and development of young people, more particularly the role of youth workers in the world of digital transformation. We highlighted our two services that sit under MHI, The Mix Charity & Shout UK about how they are built on foundations of digital roots to ensure infrastructure that can support online youth voice and spaces. It was really insightful and wonderful to meet the following people Melvin Riley,Tanya Marwaha, Bex Pink, Marcus Devaney, Abbee McLatchie and so many more people that I have not grabbed their LinkedIns! Special thank you to Anthony Lynch for organising and accompanying both Amelia and I as he shone bright today as well and special surprise to see Chris Martin who led The Mix before the merger with MHI. You can find more about the event and the standards released by the National Youth Agency here - https://lnkd.in/eivX6n-p P.S - keep an eye out for another post later on this event! #NYA #DigitalWork #DigitalStandards #MHI #TheMix #ShoutUK #YouthVoice #YoungPeople #Panel #Collabration

  • Our Director of Youth and Participation Zoe Bailie was recently invited to provide input into an ONS report 'Risk factors for suicide in children and young people in England'. Sadly, suicide is one of the leading causes of death in children and young people, and the ONS report has identified groups of young people in England with a higher risk of dying by suicide. Zoë spoke about the importance of providing children and young people with the tools to start a conversation about their thoughts and feelings, and how we can make it easier for them to find the support they need. • A quote that reads: 'If your gut is telling you something's not right, then start a conversation about it. Finding the words to start the conversation is where expert organisations come in, We need to make it easier for people to find useful, accurate and trustworthy support.' Zoe Bailie, director of youth and participation at The Mix and Mental Health Innovations.
  • An incredible milestone Selena, we're so grateful you're a part of our team.

I don’t post here as often as I’d like, but today, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on my journey with Mental Health Innovations, as I’ve just reached a milestone that means a great deal to me. My journey began in 2019 when I came across press interviews with the Prince and Princess of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who spoke passionately about Shout and their mission to transform mental health support across the UK. Their words resonated deeply with me, and I knew immediately that I wanted to be part of this movement. Without hesitation, I signed up, completed my training, and began my voluntary work as a Shout Volunteer, providing text-based support to those in crisis. By 2021, I had progressed to Level 7 or 8 as a volunteer when I made the decision to apply for a Clinical Practitioner role. At the time, I was training to become a counsellor, and this opportunity allowed me to take on more responsibilities, deepening my experience in crisis support. I found immense fulfilment in the role, gaining invaluable insights into providing immediate support to people in distress. After qualifying as a counsellor, there was no question in my mind that I wanted to continue my journey with Shout. For me, this work has never been just a stepping stone—it’s a core part of who I am and the practitioner I aspire to be. The impact we make, the lives we touch, and the support we offer in those critical moments continue to drive my passion for this field. Last year, I transitioned into a Qualified Practitioner role, which has only reinforced my commitment to this work. While my responsibilities have evolved, one thing has remained constant: my dedication to one-on-one support with texters. Being there for someone in their moment of need, offering them a safe space to talk, and helping them navigate their crisis is the heart of what I do, and it’s what I value most. Today, I’m incredibly proud to share that I have reached a major milestone—over 10,000 conversations. Each one represents a moment of connection, a person who reached out in distress, and a reminder of why this work matters. It’s an achievement that reflects not just my journey, but the strength and courage of every texter who has trusted me with their thoughts and feelings. I’m grateful for everything I’ve learned, for the team that makes this work possible, and for the opportunity to continue making a difference. Here’s to many more conversations and the ongoing mission of providing accessible, life-changing mental health support. Thank you very much to Mental Health Innovations, Michael Kitching and everyone that has supported me on this journey. There are too many to mention but thank you all. Voluntary work is important and it can change your life in so many ways you never thought possible. Why not think about volunteering with Shout or another charity and invest in not only helping others but yourself too https://lnkd.in/eNieSN4f

  • Last night, several of our staff had the opportunity to see the musical Dear Evan Hansen as it returned to London on tour. Dear Evan Hansen brings to life the issues young people face around their mental health with warmth and empathy, and focuses on the issues we speak to young people about on a daily basis at The Mix Charity and Shout UK. We're delighted to have been partnered with the show since it first came to London, both through Shout, which was chosen as one of four not-for-profit partners in 2020, and The Mix, which has worked with the show since it launched to support its actors to help them understand the issues in the play and how to sensitively talk about them, and its writers, directors and theatre staff on how to talk to young people about their mental health. The Mix also provides signposting for people to get mental health support. Our staff had an incredible evening, thank you so much to everyone at Dear Evan Hansen ✨

This year’s Mental Health Awareness Week theme is ‘Community’. Every day at Shout, our volunteers provide a safe and supportive place for people across the UK to share what’s causing them distress and help them reach a calmer place. It costs us on average £10 to support a potentially life-saving Shout conversation. Will you help us provide a safe space for people this Mental Health Awareness Week by sponsoring Shout? 💜 £100: Sponsor 10 conversations with children, young people and adults who are struggling to cope. 56% don't feel like they have anyone else to talk to 💜 £1,000: Sponsor 100 conversations, where one in three texters will be experiencing suicidal thoughts 💜 £10,000: Sponsor Shout for 24 hours, providing crisis support for more than 1,500 people in distress To sponsor Shout, visit our website: https://lnkd.in/e_akfnt3 Or find out more about sponsoring Shout for the day please email Rosie Martin, Senior Corporate Partnerships Manager: rosie.martin@mhiuk.org

  • Over the last few weeks, the Netflix drama Adolescence has sparked urgent conversations about online harm and youth mental health. At Mental Health Innovations, we believe early intervention along with positive conversations are key. Find out more about how we're working to protect and support young people's mental wellbeing, and how you can help drive change.

  • Epilepsy can be one of the most frightening, isolating and misunderstood conditions a child can experience. Approximately one in every 200 children and young people has epilepsy. In our latest partner case study, we spoke to Young Epilepsy about how they're working to support young people with their mental wellbeing through a range of support services, including Shout UK. A survey by Young Epilepsy found that over half (52%) of respondents didn’t find it easy to talk about how living with epilepsy made them feel, so by partnering with us they've been able to offer confidential and anonymous round-the-clock support to young people with epilepsy, in a way that works for them. • We couldn't wait to get our hands on one of these new 'Harry's Flat White' coffees, out now until 30 April in Starbucks stores across England. Not only do you get to try England football captain Harry Kane's coffee of choice (a delicious blend of espresso, oat milk and sugar-free vanilla syrup), but by buying one you're supporting mental health across the nation, too. That's because for every one of the Harry's Flat White's sold, Starbucks will donate 25p towards the Harry Kane Foundation (The Harry Kane Company), in support of Mental Health Innovations and the charity Bounce Forward. Every cup counts ☕
