Authenticity is overrated. There's something else that's far more powerful: → Strategic inauthenticity. In other words taking something pure, something elite, and diluting it in just the right way so it goes down smooth for more people. Let me explain. In every market there are two groups: - The inner circle - The outer circle The inner circle are the true believers. The aficionados. The pros. The experts. The people who know what great looks like, and are absolutely intolerant of anything that falls short of those standards. They are great. They are passionate. They are the innovators. But you know what else? They're bloody intolerant, and there aren't that many of them. That's where the outer circle comes in. They're interested, but mildly so. They know a bit, but not a lot. They're dabblers, they're tourists. And there are millions of them. The greatest brands don't cater to the inner circle. And they don't cater squarely to the outer circle either. (That's the realm of junk commodity brands) → Instead they play on the boundary between the two. Taking the best of the inner circle's innovations, smoothing off the rough edges, and delivering it to those in the outer circle who are looking for something better. It's crazy how many great brands play this game. Heck, even I play it. Every so often I get an "inner circle" strategist giving me a little dig in the comments on some technicality. And they are always right. But I don't care. Because that's not my game. They're not my game. And perhaps they shouldn't be your game either. Because the world is full of brands who are too busy worrying about the inner circle, neglecting the outer circle, and killing themselves as a result. So put aside your pride. Dumb it down. I don't know who needs to hear this BUT ... a good ERP system won't fix a bad culture. If you have a low first-time match rate on purchase orders, or you are slow in allocating cash and processing invoices, you should not expect a new system to fix those problems. A better tool might help, but only if it’s used properly. And if you aren’t using your existing systems properly, why will it be any different on a new system? Start by cleaning up your processes ...
