  • "The most rewarding parts of my volunteering differ depending on who I’m supporting. For one, it was seeing him relax around me. With the other, the most rewarding thing was seeing him laugh." The amazing Amber became a Marie Curie Companion in 2024 when she found herself with some extra time on her hands. Fast forward to today, and Amber visits two people each week 💛 From spending time at local garden centres to setting up Spotify playlists, Amber's found ways to connect with the people she visits which have helped her get to know herself even better too. 🌱 Want to make a difference like Amber? • "It’s a privilege to be asked on someone’s last journey. I am proud of what I do - it's a unique service at night. I think illness is more intense at night. A lot of people think more at night, because it’s quiet. The patients often need somebody at night, even if it’s just someone to talk to, or to hold their hand. A lot of the time, patients don’t want to burden the family with what they’re thinking, so to have someone different, disconnected from the family in to talk to and ask for advice is really lovely. Patients are often scared, so it’s just nice at night to be there on your own with them so they can say whatever they want and hold your hand." - Healthcare Assistant Avril

  • 🎓👏 Last month we celebrated the graduation of the 2024/2025 cohort of the National Garden Scheme (NGS) Nightingale Challenge. The NGS Nightingale Challenge is a bespoke leadership challenge for Marie Curie Nurses and other members of our caring services staff. 24 participants took part this year, which means 51 Marie Curie Nurses and Caring staff have now benefitted from this programme funded by National Garden Scheme. A big thank you to the National Garden Scheme for their continued support. 👏

  • Thank you Superdrug stores for turning yellow and hosting an amazing weekend of fundraising for the Great Daffodil Appeal. We’re also celebrating Superdrug raising over £1 million for Marie Curie through Pennies. Thank you to Superdrug customers for topping up their in-store purchases with a 20p donation! The £1 million raised is enough to fund over 43,000 hours of Marie Curie nursing care 👏 #MarieCurieUK #Superdrug

  • This week, we are delighted to celebrate SPAR and Marie Curie’s milestone £4 million achievement. 🎉 That’s enough to help fund 173,000 hours of vital Marie Curie nursing care. Since 2017, SPAR stores across the UK have supported the Great Daffodil Appeal, tackled physical challenges, hosted store fundraising events and sold millions of sandwiches featuring Marie Curie nurses. During the pandemic, SPAR delivered over 1 million pieces of PPE, supporting Marie Curie nurses working on the frontline. 👏 A huge thank you to everyone to has contributed to this milestone and supported our partnership. We couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve accomplished together!

  • This week the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, gave an update on the UK Government’s spending plans in the Spring Statement. 📝 It’s good news that the NHS will receive more funding, but we’re yet to see any specific investment that will go towards fixing palliative and end of life care services. This must be a priority for the Chancellor at the Government’s Comprehensive Spending Review in June. ❌ No proposed changes will take place until April 2026 at the earliest. But we are calling for urgent clarity from the UK Government on what the changes mean for terminally ill people.
