Exploring transport history and design through a world-class collection of buses, Underground trains, photographs, maps.

About us

London Transport Museum explores the story of London and its transport system over the last 200 years, highlighting the powerful link between transport and the growth of modern London, culture and society since 1800. We care for over 450,000 items - preserving, researching and acquiring objects to use in our galleries, exhibitions and other activities. As well as exploring the past, the Museum looks at present-day transport developments and concepts for urban transportation in the future, which includes a contemporary collecting policy for the benefit of future generations.

  • Last week we were delighted to welcome industry experts to the Museum to discuss how we can collaborate to tackle the UK’s skills shortage – with a focus on green skills, construction and engineering.     The panel of speakers included Fenella Goodhart, Director of Learning and Participation at London Transport Museum, who spoke about the impact of our Enjoyment to Employment programme and how we should be getting children excited about these careers from an early age. Enjoyment to Employment is about nurturing the enthusiasm and fascination children so often have for transport and transforming this into a career in industry. This includes changing perceptions about STEM careers, supporting skills development, and breaking down barriers to job opportunities in transport and engineering.     Thank you to all who attended to contribute towards this important discussion.    The event is part of our thought leadership initiative, Interchange, which is delivered in partnership with Hitachi Rail and Gowling WLG. Through a series of events and an annual report, we bring together industry partners to consider the challenges and opportunities facing cities, transport and infrastructure, today and tomorrow.      Want to find out how you and your company can join the conversation? Yesterday, Places for London joined a thought-provoking discussion at the London Transport Museum, focused on the growing skills gap, in the construction industry. Throughout the session, the following statements below were highlighted, reinforcing the value, of our skills initiatives. 🏗️ More people are retiring than joining the sector 🏗️ Over 250,000 additional construction workers are needed, in the sector, over the next five years. 🏗️ Only 6% of workers come from minority ethnic backgrounds 🏗️ Women make up just 14% of the workforce (with a mere 2% working on-site) During the session, Graeme Craig, Places for London’s CEO, highlighted our collaborative efforts with development partners like Barratt London and Helical plc. Working alongside The Skills Centre, we've helped place more than 3,590 people into employment - focusing our training specifically on roles we know will be in demand. While there's consensus that multiple aspects of this challenge need addressing, there's no single solution. However, everyone agreed that by working in partnership across the industry, we can find effective approaches to bridge the gap. 📢 Stay tuned to hear more about how our initiatives are uniting the industry in tackling these critical workforce challenges. #ConstructionIndustry #SkillsGap #Diversity #WorkforceDevelopment #Collaboration #Training

  • Continuing a historic tradition, London Transport Museum has collaborated with TfL to commission four brand-new posters of places easy to visit using the TfL network—starting with Dulwich Picture Gallery! 🖼️ We’ve commissioned an award-winning artist to create a series of four brand new Tube posters, which will be displayed on the London Underground network as part of the Museum’s Transported by Culture initiative. Created by artist Eliza Southwood, the new series continue a long tradition of putting great design at the heart of the capital’s transport network, a legacy credited to Frank Pick. The first in the series features Dulwich Picture Gallery, the world’s first purpose-built public art gallery, renowned for its collection of European historic paintings and its new contemporary Sculpture Garden. A perfect inspiration for the series, Dulwich has long been a destination for a great day out, and is easily accessible via the TfL network by taking the Victoria line to Brixton and then P4 bus to outside the gallery. This poster will be visible on the network from today, and available to buy from the London Transport Museum Shop in Covent Garden and online, as well as at Dulwich Picture Gallery. We can’t wait to see this incredible work of art out and about across London - let us know if you spot it! 🤩

  • Did you know that our important restoration project, getting the last three 1930s Q stock Underground carriages back up and running, was kickstarted thanks to a gift left to the Museum in a will?     March is Free Wills Month – the perfect opportunity to plan for the future, protect your loved ones, and consider leaving a gift to a charity, such as our Museum.     London Transport Museum is participating in Free Wills Month and offering you the opportunity to have a simple will written or updated by a professional, free of charge.      If you do decide to leave a gift to the Museum, no matter how big or small, you can make a real difference. It helps us to:     🚂 Continue our conservation work  🙌 Create experiences that reveal how transport has shaped the world we live in  💼 Inspire younger generations to pursue careers in the transport industry     Find out more about making a free will: https://lnkd.in/eQty5qQK

Friday afternoons are such a joy in Covent Garden with Music in the Museum. I was blown away by Vusala Babayeva performing ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ on our new (donated) baby grand piano 🎹 Vusala is an amazingly talented Azerbaijani pianist currently pursuing an Artist Diploma in Piano Performance at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama AND one of our London Transport Museum young artists! All the artists have three performances with us and if you’re organised and motivated, you can catch all ten of them - on term time through October. Next Friday 21 March we’ll hear from Agustin Pennino, Uruguayan counter tenor 🎶 Massive thanks to all our young artists, my amazing Museum team, and our artistic consultant Jennifer Johnston for making the vision of being ‘transported by culture’ a reality. It’s food for the soul (in addition to a lot of fun for visitors and real gigs for our young artists) Will post the schedule in the comments- come join us!

  • We’re delighted that one of our longest serving and most dedicated volunteers, Paul Furze, has been shortlisted in the Volunteers of the Year 2025 category as part of Museums + Heritage Advisor Awards 🏆     Paul has volunteered at London Transport Museum for 25 years in a variety of roles, including as part of our object handling team, helping out with our heritage train journeys, and as an integral part of our bus restoration team. He helps us carry out routine maintenance on our buses – safeguarding our collection for the future and ensuring our buses can attend external events to reach and inspire even more people.     He is appreciated by all, and fellow volunteer Mark said: ‘He has an encyclopaedic knowledge of buses old and new which he loves to share. His storytelling is legendary, and it is great to see his audience spell-bound by his tales.’     In 2024 alone Paul contributed 842 hours as a volunteer – and, at the age of 83, he shows no signs of stopping!     Thank you, Paul, for all your amazing work at the Museum. We are so pleased to have you as part of our team. 💙
