Yesterday we had a successful Landscape Institute East Midlands AGM, together with a fantastic tour of the Upton SUDS scheme. There was a good turn out, with some interesting discussions on ways in which the Landscape Institute can strengthen its support of the branches. #landscapearchitecture

The first Branch AGM of the year took place yesterday with the Landscape Institute South East branch. In the last year the Branch undertook brilliant engagement and promotion of the LI and its members, alongside CPD activities and member support. There was great support for the upcoming 'Landscape led' campaign as well as enthusiasm for the planned activities in the year ahead. #landscapearchitecture #landscapedesign

The project should seek to maximise value for people place and nature. This award is open, but not limited to: • Local Authority Parks and Open Spaces • Trusts or other independent/joint venture bodies • Estates and heritage parks and gardens in private ownership • Government bodies and agencies • Community groups and residents associations Let's celebrate all your hard work and get it seen by peers and thought-leaders from across the sector. This is testament to the hard work of many organisations and individuals that support delivery of the Historic Environment's Skills Investment Plan's priorities and actions to help support the sector's sustainability and resilience. With thanks to Chartered Institute for Archaeologists, Built Environment Forum Scotland, The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland, RICS, Archives & Records Association (UK & Ireland), CILIPS, Icon - The Institute of Conservation Museums Galleries Scotland National Trust for Scotland Landscape Institute Lantra,Industrial Museums Scotland, National Museums Scotland CITB DYW Scotland Skills Development Scotland, and many others....
Happy ‘Skills Investment Plan: Year One Report’ day to all those who celebrate! 🙌 Read it here: https://ow.ly/u7ZR50VGp2k It’s probably safe to say that there isn’t a heritage organisation in the whole of Scotland that isn’t concerned about skills in some way. Many traditional skills are in decline, and it can be exhausting to keep up to date with new technological developments that can help us in our work. But although there are understandable concerns and frustrations, the good news is that there’s a lot of really excellent and inspirational work taking place all over the sector. The Skills Investment Plan for the Historic Environment (or SIP to those who know it well!) is a sector-wide skills strategy that aims to ensure that Scotland has the skills it needs to promote, manage and protect our historic environment. Last year, along with dozens of partners and stakeholders all over the sector, we released a new 5-year plan to tackle our sector’s skills gap. But how have things been going? We’re glad you asked! In a nutshell, the sector has come together to provide some really valuable baseline data, and progress is being made in all areas, although some are further ahead than others. Thanks to the plan, we are working together to keep everything moving along in the right direction. And it’s important to remember it’s not a race! 🏃♀️ If you’re a proud data nerd or number cruncher, we’ve also published a data baseline, which you can download here: https://ow.ly/c8ul50VGp2i As we look back on our progress over the past year, it's clear that investing in skills development is as crucial as ever. The challenges we face might keep changing, but the importance of skills stays the same. A huge thank you to everyone who has helped make the Skills Investment Plan a reality. Your passion, expertise, and dedication have been key to driving this initiative forward. Let's gear up for another year of progress, innovation, and shared successes together!

Fresh from a great break in Yorkshire, walking, sleeping and reading, I wanted to share a couple of reflections on how important nature-rich landscapes are. I was hesitant about reading 'Good Nature' by Kathy Willis as I thought I knew all about how powerful nature is for human health and wellbeing. But I was so wrong - the evidence is much stronger than I realised - for physical and mental health and educational outcomes. This is something I'll be working to really bring out in forthcoming Landscape Institute outputs on the importance of properly designed landscapes. The government are really missing a (low cost) trick if they fail to act on this evidence in building more housing and infrastructure. Hazel Benza Michael Bingham Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government I've also loved reading Alexandra Harris's The Rising Down about the impact of the Sussex landscape over the centuries on ordinary people and great artists (Blake, Constable, Ford Maddox Ford....). Landscapes are such a powerful part of our culture.
