Updates

  • Over eight years ago, we started our partnership with Monte Sant' Angelo Mercy College in Sydney to deliver the Inspiring STEM+ Programme to students interested in pursuing a career in STEM.   To date, we have hosted over 120 Monte students at our sites, teaching them about the world of construction through activities covering sustainability, safety, innovation and more.    Most recently, we kicked off the first module for the latest cohort with a visit to the Sydenham to Bankstown team delivering the Southwest Metro Corridor. The visit included activities at the Canterbury compound followed by a site tour of Bankstown Station’s new metro platforms, entrance and plaza.

Hard to believe that we launched the Inspiring STEM+ program with Laing O'Rourke over 8 years ago and now kicking off Cohort 4! We’ve seen some pretty amazing things being built over this time from 100 Mount Street to Sydney Uni’s ETP to Sydney Central Station Metro and now, our girls will be exploring and learning about the construction industry through the context of Laing O’Rourke’s joint venture with John Holland; working on the Southwest Metro Conversion and Station Works. Module 1 for cohort 4 kicked off with a visit to Sydenham and Bankstown where the girls learnt about the S2B project. A big thank you to Sarah Chilby, Brenton Dwyer, Dominica Crosby and Sam Serwa for working with the girls and thank you to the broader team who were there to provide learning insights at the Bankstown site. As always, there’s a core group of people who bring all of the moving parts together in making this program possible. Thank you must also go to Kayla Chaoui and Lynnda Lim-Huynh from Laing O’Rourke and Kiya Siutz from our end for a great kick off to Inspiring STEM+ 4.0. It’s pretty amazing that Kayla and Kiya are both Monte alumni - in fact, Kayla was a participant in the very first Inspiring STEM+ program back in 2017. #msamc #construction #engineering Monte Sant' Angelo Mercy College Nicole Brian Stephen Monte Sant' Angelo Mercy College Cathal O'Rourke #inspiringstem

Laing O’Rourke is proud to be working in partnership with Main Roads Western Australia to deliver the Swan River Crossings project. Piling is approaching completion with 21 piles now driven 60 metres into the riverbed. The first two (of four) pile cap shells have been successfully installed on the southern side of the Traffic Bridge. Each shell is 14 metres and weighs approximately 118 tonnes. Once piling and pile caps are complete, works will begin to construct the bridge towers at each corner of the site.

The Swan River Crossings Project is making great progress with piling approaching completion and the first two pile caps lifted into place! 21 piles have now been driven 60 metres into the riverbed at three corners of the bridge. The remaining piles on the north western corner are expected to be finished by the end of April. Last month, the first two (of four) pile cap shells were successfully lifted into position on the southern side of the Traffic Bridge. Each shell is 14 metres long and weighs approximately 118 tonnes. Remarkably, the first shell was lifted and installed in just one hour by the Project’s 480 tonne crane! 🏗️ Pile caps shells on the northern side of the bridge will follow in mid-April. Once piling and pile caps are completed, works will begin to construct the bridge towers at each corner of the site. • Great to see the first shell beam being installed at the Ellison Institute of Technology Oxford (EIT) this week. The 42 tonne beam was manufactured at our Centre of Excellence for Modern Construction (#CEMC) by Explore Manufacturing - part of Laing O'Rourke. A good milestone moment caught here against a lovely blue sky. 19 more shell beams to go! We began working with EIT in 2022 under a pre-construction services agreement and with the main contract to deliver a new world class research and development facility now signed, it's rewarding to see the project taking shape. Once complete, the state-of-the-art facility will bring together scientists, technologists, policy makers, economists and entrepreneurs to bring scientific discovery to real-world solutions. • As an East West Rail Alliance member, alongside VolkerRail Ltd, Network Rail and AtkinsRéalis, we're delighted that Phase 2 of the project has been shortlisted in the Project of the Year (over £50m) category at the 2025 Construction News awards. The project will connect communities between Oxford and Cambridge and is a prime example of how we're delivering much-needed infrastructure in the UK. East West Rail Phase 2 is the first rail project to achieve 10% biodiversity net gain and has also delivered £3.5m of social value, and will leave behind a positive, lasting impact. We're incredibly proud of the whole team involved and will have our fingers crossed for the award ceremony taking place in London in July 🤞

  • Today we celebrated Rail R U OK? Day across our projects in Australia. This day is an important reminder to check in with our colleagues because we all have a responsibility to make sure people feel they are supported and can bring their whole selves to work.   This year’s theme is ANY DAY, and in such a fast-paced industry, time can often feel against us. We made time today to bring our teams together and remind them that life happens every day - and at any given time, someone will be experiencing a stressful moment - so we have to make the time to check in. A simple but heartfelt “Are you OK?” can make a world of difference.   Hear our Rail Operations team talk about what Rail R U OK? Day means to them.
