For my very first LinkedIn post, it feels fitting to share that I have the privilege of being the Chair for the 26th IWA UK Young Water Professionals Annual Conference. Stepping into this role has definitely pushed me outside of my comfort zone — but sometimes that’s exactly what we need to grow. Calling all Young Water Professionals! 📣💧 We are inviting you to register to present a poster or deliver an onstage presentation at our IWA UK YWP Annual Conference in Brighton (16th July – 18th July) 🗓️ This is your opportunity to gain visibility in the industry and showcase your expertise to industry experts. You will build confidence in presenting complex ideas to diverse audiences and receive valuable feedback. Help inspire others to be part of important discussions shaping the future of the sector. 🤓 We are in the process of organising a great selection of prizes for the best posters and presentations, which we will announce in a future post. 🏆 Details: Presentations can be on a project that you have worked on, something you have researched, or simply something that you're particularly interested in and would like to share. We encourage those from all different realms of the water industry in the early stages of their water careers to apply, whether that be engineering, asset management, operations, finance, regulation etc. Poster presentations will be displayed in our main exhibition during the conference. Presenters will have a dedicated slot in the agenda to present their poster, where delegates and judges from our judging panel, will ask questions. YWP Speakers will have 10-15 minutes worth of presenting time over multiple slides. All presenters will have the opportunity to attend this year’s IWA UK YWP Conference at a discounted rate! Another amazing presentation by Nour Rashid (RPS Group), the winner of the IWA UK YWP - Young Water Professionals UK Conference 2024. As part of her prize, Nour was given the opportunity to not only attend but also to present her winning presentation at the Institute of Water Annual Conference 2024. Last week I had the pleasure of attending a 3 day conference led by the IWA UK YWP - Young Water Professionals UK. I met a wide range of water industry professionals through a variety of informative sessions, workshops and presentations. I enjoyed learning about the innovative projects fellow young professionals are involved in. These projects ranged from nature based solutions for flood management (Sophie Tankard) and treating greywater (Dalrene Teresa Keerthika James) to monitoring of phosphorus (Rebeka Cuco), water quality (with MIKE 11) (Yuanyuan Ge) and water pressure (Juan David Santamaría Sánchez). I learnt about region specific water issues: Future fens integrated adaptation (Anna Wilson) and The Beacon Project (Tanisha Kaur Bisla). Other talks covered: PFAS and what the water industry is doing (James Kennedy), Digital twins in the water industry and their challenges (Nour Rashid), Water and the flow of ideas (Caroline P.) and Harnessing untapped water flow potential (Saffron Corcoran). Being an economists in a room filled primarily with engineers was a challenge which pushed me to develop my technical knowledge of the water industry by actively listening to others and asking lots of questions. It was also interesting to hear from head of innovation at United Utilities, Kieran Brocklebank who discussed their plan for the North West and how the Ofwat Innovation Fund is helping to support their plans. On the final day, I visited United Utilities Davyhulme wastewater treatment works. The plant is one of the largest in Europe and I was impressed by the size of the operation there. I saw first-hand how water is screened and then treated before being discharged. As a local of the area I was also glad to hear about the various odour reducing techniques the site has adopted to reduce the impact of foul odours on locals. I would like to thank Elizabeth Savage, Humphrey E. and Ofwat for supporting me to attend this conference. I also want to thank Steven Lee, IWA UK YWP - Young Water Professionals UK and all the volunteers who helped organise and run an excellent event. It was a pleasure to attend the IWA UK YWP - Young Water Professionals UK 25th Annual Conference last week as a committee member.   The hard work of our committee over the past year culminated in an exceptional few days of inspirational talks and discussions with young water professionals from all across the sector. Additionally, the chance to hear from and meet many leaders who have had amazing careers within the water industry was an invaluable experience. Our site visit on the final day, to Mayfield Park in Manchester, showed how excellent design and thought can produce beautiful places for people while improving water quality and reducing flood risk. I am passionate about working to create better places for people and nature, and my time at the IWA UK YWP conference gave me so much inspiration to continue with this work.   I would recommend the experience of attending the conference or being on the committee to any young professionals who work within any part of the water sector. It’s an eye-opening opportunity to gain fresh perspectives, learn about cutting-edge innovations, and build lasting connections. I’ve returned with newfound knowledge and a network of inspiring friends as well as a renewed purpose to help work towards a better water future. So many of the challenges we are facing in the world, such as flooding, biodiversity loss, droughts, inequality, and polluted water courses are connected to water. It is only by working together across the sector that we can begin to tackle them successfully.   Thanks Arup for giving me the opportunity to have this experience. Also a big thank you to the other committee members for all their hard work!

What an incredible three days at the 2024 UK Young Water Professional Conference in Manchester! 🌊 Last week I was given the opportunity of representing Arup at this exciting event. It was an experience packed with insightful workshops, innovation talks, and dynamic sessions. The three most important things I’ll be taking away from this are: 1. The current regulations in the UK are hindering the water sector with penalties discouraging risk-taking and therefore stifling innovation. We need to incentivise and facilitate the implementation of these inventions to actually make a difference. 🌱 2. Hearing from industry leaders with decades of experience was truly inspiring. Whether they've been in water for 35 years or just a decade, none of their career journeys were linear. Many admitted to feeling unsure and making mistakes, especially in senior roles. Yet, these challenges were their greatest learning moments, proving that growth often comes from discomfort and perseverance.👷♀️ 3. It's amazing how constraints can drive creativity. Time and again, we saw examples of how tough challenges led to innovative solutions. This reinforces the idea that adversity can be a powerful catalyst for innovation. (Thank you for the fun workshop Kieran Brocklebank ) ⚙️ A huge thank you to Arup for this fantastic opportunity and to all the organisers (Steven Lee and the committee of the IWA UK YWP - Young Water Professionals UK ) you’ve inspired me to embrace new challenges, think creatively, and make my voice heard.
