I'm a Scientist can help show all students that there is a space in STEM for them! A students in today's Chat with Bexhill College wanted advice to give those who enjoy science but find it tricky. Each student can ask unique questions, that interest them receiving personalised responses. Teachers, find out more: https://lnkd.in/eSvKs7mW

Education
A student-led activity connecting students with a diverse range of professionals in STEM
About us
I’m a Scientist is a student-led STEM enrichment activity. Students connect with a diverse range of scientists working in various specialisms and backgrounds. When students make connections with these scientists, they are more likely to see STEM as something for them, supporting their science capital. I’m a Scientist meets 6 of the Gatsby Good Careers Guidance Benchmarks and supports the Science Capital Teaching Approach. Our tried and tested lesson plans have strong curriculum links and a range of learning outcomes for all ages.

Today is DNA day, celebrating Maurice Wilkins, Rosalind Franklin, Francis Crick and James Watson for their work on the structure of DNA. 🧬 Students at Holme Junior and Infant school spoke to scientists and explored how genetics and evolution play a part in our bodies adapting to the environment. A great question with a very understandable answer, thanks Mick! https://lnkd.in/eRCnTipg

Today is International Girls in ICT Day and we are celebrating by highlighting women inspiring the next generation of computer scientists through I’m a Computer Scientist, Get me out of here! 💡Taylor-Anne supports the sales team at ThermoFisher Scientific by improving the tools they use every day with the help of AI. 🚀 K-Jo works as an operations and cyber security manager after having started her career as an apprentice in space engineering. They serve as examples for students, helping them see that computer science is for them. National Centre for Computing Education

Today is International Girls in ICT Days. Schools have booked to connect their students with females who use computer science in their roles. Questions are completely student-led. They lead the conversation. We like this moment between a student from Didcot and Taylor-Anne. This student asked 20 questions across the 30 minutes, receiving responses from 6 computer scientists. Their questions were very focused around challenges in the workplace, large impact work and favourite elements of work. National Centre for Computing Education

Happy Earth Day! 🌎 Year 7 students at Didcot Girl's School connected with computer scientists this morning. They asked about their careers but had their interest peaked by Charlie Boswell's speciality, fusion reactors. The text-based element of the Chat supports students to feel comfortable to ask about things they are unsure about. https://lnkd.in/eW-kkZ3b

Um, so apparently I'm kind of a big deal on I'm a Scientist, Get me out of here right now. Just sayin'. 🎉 (Thanks ModJamie for the pick) Currently featured under their Scientist Spotlight! (Made my week! And I'm still slightly geeking out about it - in case you couldn't tell... 😄) Seriously though, this program is AMAZING. Making science accessible and showing kids that scientists are actual humans? YES. If you're a scientist who loves outreach (or just wants to answer some brilliantly weird questions from 10-year-olds), get involved. It's the best kind of chaos. 🧨 #STEM #ScienceEducation #Outreach #WomenInSTEM #Humblebrag

I'm having such a great time being part of "I'm a Computer Scientist, Get Me Out of Here!" This student-led STEM enrichment activity connects school students with STEM professionals through engaging real-time text-based chats. ⭐ The students, aged 10-18, ask incredibly interesting questions! They range from "What do computer scientists eat?" ❔ to gathering my opinion on generative AI, data-driven algorithms, and bias. I genuinely enjoy dedicating an hour each week to this platform. It really does brighten up my day. 🌞 Volunteering time and sharing knowledge like this is truly rewarding and helps inspire the next generation of thinkers! This month’s computer scientist in the spotlight is Yana 🎉 Yana works in cancer research. She uses code to study proteins in patients to find better treatments. Yana takes part in I’m a Computer Scientist showing students how modern science is multi-disciplinary, that skills such as coding and maths are essential to being a modern scientist. Take a closer look at Yana’s profile here: https://lnkd.in/eFPvKdbB The Genetics Society National Centre for Computing Education

We’ve partnered with STFC to bring even more opportunities to engage school students with physics. New funding for 100 additional scientists means there’s space for you to join in! Connect with students in online, text-based Chats, when it suits your schedule. Chat about your experiences to show how classroom subjects apply to real life. You’ll help young people relate to their learning and where it could take them, inspiring the next generation in STEM! Apply to take part: https://lnkd.in/e5NS3-cf
