  • The Port of Felixstowe Celebrates Its Sesquicentenary The Port of Felixstowe is celebrating its 150th anniversary throughout 2025. Originally established as The Felixstowe Railway and Pier Company in 1875, the name was subsequently changed to the Felixstowe Dock & Railway Company. ‘FDRC’ as it is fondly known by many current and former employees remains the statutory company that operates the port under the Hutchison Ports Port of Felixstowe banner to this day.   From very humble beginnings as a small agricultural port, it was requisitioned by the Royal Navy in both world wars before being developed as the UK’s first operational container port in the 1960s. It has been the UK’s largest container port since the early 1980s and is an essential facilitator of UK trade that continues to support the country’s economic growth, regularly welcoming the world’s largest container ships.   There will be a number of events during the year to mark the anniversary. Stay posted and we will provide more information on these in due course. #portofbritain

  • Hutchison Ports UK International Women’s Day 2025 Events   Hutchison Ports UK celebrated International Women’s Day by hosting events for staff internally and a careers event for students at Colchester Institute. A team from the Port of Felixstowe attended a careers event at Colchester Institute on 06 March. They delivered talks to approximately 175 students on topics including International Women's Day, ISD, HR, Automated Operations, Engineering and our current apprenticeship vacancies. Students were given an insight on working at the port and, also, the ongoing work being done to ensure we have a sustainable workforce and business. Students were provided with useful materials including booklets on terminology related to gender, sexuality, neurodiversity and information on careers at the port. The recruitment team shared tips for CV writing and job applications. On 07 March, two internal drop-in events were held for staff in Felixstowe and Harwich. The events focussed on this year’s key themes for International Women’s Day; access to training and education for women, women’s health & menopause and the infrastructure to accommodate the needs of women and girls. The event also raised awareness of Hutchison Ports UK policies for family leave. The drop-in sessions gave employees the opportunity to network with colleagues from different departments and celebrate International Women’s Day. #IWD

  • Dredging at Port of Felixstowe Supports Innovative Coastal Protection and Wildlife Habitat Project   Routine harbour maintenance works at the Port of Felixstowe is supporting a £25m Environment Agency project to bolster coastal defences. Dredged materials will be used to create new wildlife habitats and help protect communities from flooding as a consequence of rising sea levels.   The Port of Felixstowe has the deepest approach channel of any UK container port. Regular dredging is required at all ports to ensure safe navigation and the two-year project at Felixstowe, involving the Essex Wildlife Trust, RSPB and Harwich Haven Authority, aims to collect 85,000 cubic metres of sediment for beneficial use in Essex.   The initiative is aiming to create up to 16 miles of coastal flood defences, 406 hectares of coastal flood plain grazing marsh and 240 hectares of coastal saltmarsh.   The project area is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Special Area of Conservation (SAC), Special Protected Area (SPA) and Ramsar Site (an internationally-important wetland), and it is hoped that beach nesting birds such as ringed plover and little terns will also benefit from the new habitat.   It is a great example of how the operation of commercial ports can contribute positively to their surrounding ecosystems and communities.   https://lnkd.in/ezbQEEMQ
