Frieda Gormley and Javvy M Royle first dreamt up House of Hackney from their home in 2011. Today the husband-and-wife team has grown into a family of artists, designers, producers and collaborators. Driven by our founding principles of creativity with purpose, integrity in our actions and compassion for people and planet, we continue to build upon the House, creating unique and inspiring designs that will stand the test of time. Our Housemates are innovators who see the world differently and strive to make a difference within it. Each one is chosen and cherished for the skills, talents and characteristics that make them unique. In our House, we care for the wellbeing of our team; that is why we offer a more flexible approach to working and operate a four-day week over the summer period, and a 4pm finish in the winter. As well as caring for our colleagues, we also care deeply about our eternal muse - Mother Nature. House of Hackney is proud to be certified as a B Corp™; a business that meets the highest verified standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability, and we are partnered with the World Land Trust, the international conservation charity that safeguards our most vital natural ecosystems and threatened habitats, acre by acre. "B Lab UK assessment has been the basis of our work at House of Hackney for four years now. B Corp felt like a natural extension of our values when we decided to take the B Lab assessment in 2020. It has proved an incredibly useful and thorough framework to structure our work. Highlighting our successes and gaps, it has helped us to set tangible goals and activate our team, as well as being a selling point for a new generation of values-led candidates when we’re hiring. We are very happy to say that we re-certified in January 2025 with a score of 109 points. This was down to the dedication of our wonderful team and suppliers. Meanwhile, Nature sounds her clarion call for protection ever louder. As we fell under the spell of the industrial and digital revolutions that brought us indoors and away from the wonders of Nature, we have numbed and dumbed ourselves, forgetting our place within the natural world, and that we are Nature itself. We have forgotten the abundance of the Garden, which lies just beyond our doors, waiting to nourish and heal us with its generous gifts. It's time to urgently break this spell of indifference and apathy and cast a new one; one that calls forth re-enchantment and re-connection with the wonders of Nature. Project | The Whiteley, Design Residence We were honoured to design a four-bedroom residence at The Whiteley London. Once the home of London’s first department store, The Whiteley is set for a stunning £1.2 billion transformation into a chic residential and hospitality destination. We were hand picked to design one of the 139 unique homes in its Designer Collection. Spanning 4,080 sq. ft. with 6-metre ceiling heights, the apartment comes complete with a 400 sq. ft. mezzanine reaching 2.7 metres in height and incorporating floor-to-ceiling interior windows that overlook a central living space. Designed to evoke the tastes of an imaginary globetrotter, the residence showcases diverse influences from Asia, the United Kingdom and across Europe, resulting in a juxtaposition of collectibles, heirlooms, custom-made limited editions, antiques and crafts which reflect the spirit of travel and adventure.
