See Community Payback in action as offenders repair railway tracks at Nene Valley Railway, a beloved heritage railway attraction in Peterborough. Community Payback is demanding physical labour that punishes while giving back to society, with offenders completing work that restores public spaces, improves facilities, and supports valued heritage sites like Nene Valley Railway. Courts can order 40-300 hours of unpaid work, contributing to the 5 million hours delivered annually across the UK. Watch how these projects help reduce reoffending, teach valuable skills, and transform neighbourhoods while ensuring justice is both seen and delivered.

  • We partnered with award-winning poet laureate and former probation officer, Simon Armitage, who has written an ode to those working in the Probation Service, acknowledging the extraordinary work they do to encourage others to follow in their footsteps. Inspired by interviews with real probation staff and drawing on his own personal experiences in the Service, A Life in the Day Of seeks to change perceptions of the job as new research shows 35% of adults know nothing about what it’s like to work in probation roles. The poem offers a heartfelt thank you to everyone that continues to work in this important but often misunderstood profession. Our newest prison was opened by Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood yesterday. 🔒 HMP Millsike, in Yorkshire, has nearly 1,500 new prison places. 🔨 It’s designed to cut crime, with workshops and training facilities aimed at getting offenders into work on release, helping them turn away from crime, meaning fewer victims in the future. 💼 It will create over 600 jobs, providing a boost to the job market and economy in the local area. ❌ The Category C prison is also fitted with technology to keep the facility secure and to prevent contraband like drugs, drones and phones from entering the establishment. • 🧠 At least 50% of prisoners are estimated to have some form of neurodivergence.   To make sure they have the right support we now have Neurodiversity Support Managers (NSMs) in all prisons. Our NSMs help develop a more supportive environment for neurodiversity in prisons by: ✅ identifying prisoners’ needs and making sure the right support is in place ✅ helping prepare neurodivergent prisoners for resettlement in the community ✅ improving processes to support those with neurodivergent needs ✅ supporting and training staff to improve their understanding of neurodiversity ✅ improving access to education, skills and work opportunities Dainya is a Neurodiversity Support Manager at HMP Downview and she found many of the female offenders she was supporting had little understanding of their neurodivergence or how it impacted them.  She developed a series of workshops called ‘Neurodivergence & Me’ which explore a range of topics including how ADHD can present for female offenders, hormonal changes and their impact on how those with ADHD feel and function, masking, emotional regulation, and support strategies. 💬 Dainya said “For many of the female offenders, this was the first time they felt seen. It’s given them a better understanding of how they see the world and react to things.” Rebecca works at HMP Kirkham as a Neurodiversity Support Manager, and part of her role is to make sure neurodivergence considerations are part of the resettlement process as the men prepare life after prison. For neurodivergent people, change can be a time of anxiety. Rebecca ensures neurodivergent prisoners have access to the opportunities, services, and support they need to prepare for release. 💬 Rececca said: “When neurodiverse needs are considered it can enable a smooth transition into the community, which can reduce the likelihood of reoffending.” Hear more about the role and its benefits from Liz, NSM at HMP Pentonville ⬇️ #NeurodiversityCelebrationWeek

It has been announced today that Dame Antonia Romeo, will be moving to the Home Office to be the new Permanent Secretary and I have been asked to take up the role of Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Justice UK (MoJ) on an interim basis. Many congratulations to Antonia, she has been a truly brilliant Permanent Secretary for us in the MoJ. I have had the pleasure and privilege of working for Antonia for a number of years and I am hugely grateful to her for all her guidance and support during that time. It has been an enormous honour and privilege for me to be CEO of HM Prison and Probation Service for the last two and a half years and I am delighted that Phil Copple will be taking over from me as interim CEO. Phil is an exceptional leader and I feel assured that HMPPS will be left in very capable hands. A huge and heartfelt personal thank you to everyone who works for HMPPS for the incredible work you do every day which goes largely unseen by the public but makes such an enormous difference to victims, communities and individuals. • We're continuing our International Women’s Day celebrations by highlighting Jaynab's story. As a Senior Case Administrator in the Offender Management Unit at HMPPS, Jaynab has had an incredible journey in the Prison Service. She joined in 2004 as a Band 2 Administrator at HMP Swansea, at a time when female representation - especially from ethnic minority backgrounds - was rare in male establishments. Reflecting on her early days, she shares: "I was the only woman from an ethnic minority background working in HMP Swansea and across any prison in Wales at that time. It was daunting, but I was determined to prove that I belonged and could make a difference." Over the years, Jaynab has progressed through multiple departments, securing promotions and now serving as a Band 4 Senior Case Administrator. Beyond her role, she is passionate about diversity and inclusion, actively mentoring colleagues and supporting the recruitment of ethnic minority candidates. "I’ve always believed in lifting others as I climb. That’s why I’ve dedicated time to mentoring and coaching colleagues, helping them navigate their own career journeys. Seeing more women and diverse talent progress in the Prison Service is incredibly rewarding." Jaynab’s inspiring story featured in the Gwaith Merched exhibition in Wales. The exhibition showcased contemporary and historical images of Welsh women in diverse professions. Highlighted her pioneering role as the first ethnic minority woman working in Welsh prisons and her dedication to creating a more inclusive workplace. An extraordinary Job, done by someone like you.
