✨ We couldn't be more proud to share that our storm-resistant floating platform for Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) has successfully made its first journey into the Atlantic waters! 🌊 ⚡ Don, the cylindric hull built under the EU-funded project PLOTEC was lifted into the ocean yesterday, at Hidramar Shipyards. Our Lead Engineer Sam Johnston details the operation in the video below. ⤵️ ⏭️ The next step will be towing the structure to the site testing at Plataforma Oceánica de Canarias (PLOCAN) and assembling a cold-water intake pipe and proprietary connection point. 🔛 Stay tuned for our next exciting updates, as we continue to work to make OTEC viable in storm-prone regions! #PLOTEC #GlobalOTEC #OTEC #HorizonEurope #EU #OceanEnergy #Renewables #SustainableFuture
About us
Global OTEC has designed a floating platform capable of converting solar heat energy stored in the oceans into renewable baseload power. Fossil fuels dominate across tropical islands, driving GHG emissions and socio-economic weaknesses. They lack the space - or resource - for conventional renewables such as solar, wind and hydro to provide baseload power. Their reliance on imported fuels creates volatility, trade imbalances, FX shortages and macroeconomic weakness. Small Island EEZs represent 30% of all ocean & seas; 28 times greater than their land space. Tropical oceans absorb the solar energy-equivalent to 170bn barrels of oil per day. This can be harnessed using a well-known thermodynamic cycle. The cycle uses the temperature difference between warm surface seawater and cold deep seawater to repeatedly evaporate and condense a working fluid. The vapour produced runs a turbine which produces electricity. GOR has designed the first cost-effective system to supply to a market with an urgent need for alternative renewables. The power plant is contained in an innovative floating system, capable of conveying the cold and warm water, whilst also maintaining stability in the marine environment.

Growing up, I remember playing with an old vegetable box with my siblings. But to us, it wasn’t just a vegetable box, it was a car (used for a very poor re-enactment of Grease if memory serves…). As kids, we didn’t let the outward appearance of the box limit our imaginations. Some people will see a box, I see the next step in OTEC power generation. But what does this mean? To date, OTEC installations have been purpose-built projects used in one-off applications or for research purposes. At Global OTEC, we are developing the OTEC Power Module, standardised OTEC power generator for use on land or at sea. To find out more about why we’re doing this, the next steps, and how you can get involved please read our litepaper below. #ClimateTech #RenewableEnergy #OTEC #IslandResilience #EnergyTransition

From HDPE to the sea. It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly two years since Sam Johnston and I hauled a pool-sized version of Don into Charlton Lido, drawing stares and questions from curious morning swimmers. (Throwback video here: https://lnkd.in/eXUn_ak9) Anyone who’s been through the startup grind knows the kind of grit it takes to keep going. I’m proud to say that every single person on our team has that same fire, which makes Global OTEC what it is. When you take a moment to step back and see the journey — from plastic to steel, from lido to ocean — it ignites something powerful deep down inside. A reminder of how far we’ve come, and how much further we’re going 🚀🤘🏼 Thank you to everyone following our journey and cheering from the sidelines. We hear and feel every bit of it.

Terawatts of untapped power When talking about offshore renewables, we generally think of offshore wind, wave, or tidal energy. All three are great solutions for generating power and aiding with decarbonisation, but why does Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) tend to get left out of the conversation? Traditional offshore renewable energy suffers from a problem, providing baseload power. The problem is even worse in tropical rotating storm prone areas, as the challenging environment restricts the operational window of these devices. So, is OTEC any different? OTEC is essentially a heat pump in the ocean. It uses hot surface seawater, and cold deep ocean water, to generate power using the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC). Unlike wind, waves and the tide, the water temperatures below the ocean’s surface don’t vary by much. This means OTEC can function 24 hours a day, 365 days a year between the tropics, providing baseload power. The ocean is a giant battery, why don’t we tap into it? #Blueenergy #OTEC #offshoreengineering #offshoreenergy #startup

"The time to scale ocean thermal energy is now!" 🌊⚡ ⏭️ Check out our new Litepaper: Pathway to Commercialisation, by our Founder and CEO Dan Grech ⤵️
We all know that the world needs more clean, continuous power. Wind and solar can’t do it alone. Global OTEC is unlocking a vast, underused energy source: the temperature difference in tropical oceans. Our modular offshore platform delivers 24/7 renewable power — where the grid can’t reach and batteries don’t cut it. This is the result of years of relentless work from a team driven to prove that OTEC can be commercially viable — and vital. Today, we’re proud to share our new Litepaper: Pathway to Commercialisation. It lays out how we’re making ocean thermal energy scalable and investable: ⚡ OTEC Power Modules® for industrial-scale deployment 🌍 Co-located energy for oil & gas, data centres, power-to-x & more 📈 4-phase roadmap to 50MW projects 📉 Targeting LCOE under $0.07/kWh as we scale We’ve built our first platform prototype. We’ve raised $6.5M, mostly non-dillutive. We’re working with global partners to bring the first commercial offshore systems to life. What’s in this paper isn’t a theory — it’s the blueprint. Scroll down. Read on. See how ocean thermal energy becomes reality. #OTEC #CleanEnergy #EnergyTransition #OffshoreRenewables #ClimateTech #BaseloadPower
