Fieldwork Robotics based in Cambridge is developing the world’s first autonomous raspberry harvesting robot. Presently, it is estimated that up to 30% of crops are left unpicked due to labour shortages, meaning that huge amounts of fresh produce is going to waste. Fieldwork Robotics is pleased to welcome Sanjoy Chakraborty to the team as an Electronic Engineer. With 24 years of experience working in electronics, Sanjoy has undertaken hardware designs in industries including automotive, medical and defence. He joins us from Gardasoft, where he worked on high performance controllers for machine vision systems – a key experience for his new role at Fieldwork. Our team 🧑🔧 The final post in our series on the Fieldworker 1 showcases the people behind the technology. 🦾Our hardware teams have been running the robot through thousands of test cycles to improve their design before releasing them into the field, and have recently achieved our highest pick per hour rate. 🧑💻Our software team have consolidated and simplified the control code, allowing greatly improved test coverage, modularity and configurability, making the system more robust, predictable and scalable. 📊 Our data science team have been analysing harvest data to create commercial models that will allow us to run different picking scenarios to optimise how our robots can be best used to support the harvesting workforce and achieve the most efficient yield. 👁️Our vision team have optimised the models for improved detection granularity for unripe, ripe and over ripe berries, and have also developed a baseline berry model to drive down the amount of data required to recognise new varieties or conditions. There’s lots that the Fieldworker 1 can do, but it can’t be done without the input of our exceptional engineering teams! We are pleased to welcome Avelino Forechi to our R&D team in Portugal as a Computer Vision Engineer. With over 20 years of expertise in software engineering, computer vision, machine learning, and robotics, Avelino has made significant contributions in both commercial industry and academia and holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (Oficial). Avelino joins us from MOV.AI - The Robotics Engine Platform™, where he was a Lead Perception Engineer, designing and developing advanced algorithms for autonomous mobile robots across various form factors, enabling autonomous navigation and efficient fleet management.
