When I joined the Fire Service, I thought I was physically fit. However, the intense training undertaken during my initial recruits course, proved to me very quickly, how wrong I could be. Then, on the occasions when attending certain challenging incidents. the physicality experienced was way beyond my wildest expectations. Especially those involving prolonged periods of wearing breath apparatus in hot and humid conditions. However, there was a sense of pride and achievement when a successful outcome was achieved. Therefore, I can’t start to imagine the extreme levels of physical exhaustion and fatigue that must have been experienced by those brave firefighters who attended the Grenfell Tower fire. A huge level of respect to each and everyone. It soon became clear to me, why it was so important to have high standards of basic training. But, this experience needed to be underpinned by advice and support provided from our more experienced peer group members. Then, more specialised training was received along our progression in the service. Combined, this input gave me a confidence and clear understanding as to why such intense and varied levels of training is required. A massive thankyou also goes out to all other emergency service employees for your service. All emergency service workers are part a team. Each and every one being a key member of a much larger team. 🙏🙏❤️🙏🙏
