Precision medicine in Wales – a inspiring showcase for this life-changing approach to healthcare at the Precision Medicine Showcase event hosted by MediWales last week. 🧬🔬💉 Precision medicine offers new ways of treating disease based on individual patient characteristics and can enable earlier and more accurate diagnosis of diseases. The Innovate UK Advancing Precision Medicine programme funded projects aiming to develop digital and data-enabled tools, as well as multi-modal approaches for more accurate diagnosis and treatment stratification. Here are just a few of the highlights of the event: Suzanne Rankin, CEO of Cardiff and Vale University Health Board/Senior Responsible Officer, Genomics Partnership Wales gave the keynote speech. She said precision medicine is not a choice, but a necessity. As the UK population is growing sicker, health inequality is rising and life expectancy is decreasing. She talked about how Wales is leading the way in precision medicine, citing whole genome sequencing, pharmacogenomics, Car-T therapy, circulating tumour DNA, intracranial therapy deployment and neuropsychiatric genomics.   Uzma Asghar, CSO of Concr and Consultant Medical Oncologist (The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust), gave a fascinating insight into the progress being made on the Innovate UK funded Advancing Precision Medicine project, (AI)-VISION. The company, with partners Durham University and the The Institute of Cancer Research is validating a system that predicts a patient’s response to treatment for triple negative breast cancer, which accounts for 10-15% of breast cancers globally. Peter Bishop, founder and MD of Agile Kinetic Limited, talked about his company’s Advancing Precision Medicine project, delivered in partnership with Cardiff University's Musculoskeletal Biomechanics Research Facility and Acumed Ltd. By using the company’s MoveLab® platform, Agile hopes to reduce the cost of the 10 billion in-person movement assessments carried out in healthcare each year by 99 per cent.   Gwyn Tudor, CEO of our host MediWales, gave an overview of the precision medicine and wider life science landscape in Wales. He said: “This event highlighted what Wales has to offer the wider UK and beyond in the field of precision medicine.
