We’re still buzzing from our annual Cycle to MIPIM charity quiz night hosted in London, and proud to share that we raised over £3,000 through ticket sales and the raffle! 👏 In March, Gareth Atkinson and Stephen O'Malley made their epic 1400km cycle to Cannes with Club Peloton. We’re so proud of them for taking on the challenge - and smashing it! 🚴 Thank you to all those who sponsored the pair, including REDD - Real Estate Design & Development, Bluebeam, Rapport3 and Caytons - A Gallagher Bassett Company. The financial support you provided will go a long way and have some big impacts on people’s lives who really need it - including Cyclists Fighting Cancer, Tom AP Rhys Price Memorial Trust and Coram. A huge thank you to everyone who came along to the quiz, took part, and dug deep for brilliant causes! Special shout out to the quizmasters, volunteers, and sponsors who helped bring it all together - and, of course, congrats to our winning team, RDT Architects, who won after a tie by a tense game of rock, paper, scissors. 😬 Check out a few snapshots from the evening below! 📸 This means 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 £𝟭𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗹 from our team’s Cycle to MIPIM activity – absolutely amazing result for deserving cause. 🙏 The donation link is still live so it’s not too late to contribute: https://lnkd.in/eHB_aRFN 👉 Click here to see the final list of quiz team scores from the night: https://lnkd.in/e_vUrCBc

  • 💭 Leeds is a city of innovation, ambition, and economic opportunity. However, it is being held back by its limited public transport routes and lack or inter-suburb connectivity. This leads to communities feeling isolated, making urban life less attractive for those who want more than just a place to work. We wanted to discuss this view further, so we held a roundtable at our Leeds office, hosted by our Leeds director, Leah Stuart, inviting industry leaders in transport and connectivity. The discussion featured: ◽ Adam Brannen, MRTPI, Head of regeneration at Leeds City Council  ◽ Dr David Swann, Research Fellow at Royal College of Art  ◽ Mark Harris, Director, Avison Young  ◽ Simon Pope, Director for Transport Capital Programmes at West Yorkshire Combined Authority  ◽ Vicky Casey, Architect Director & Leeds Studio Lead at BDP    Visions for a future Leeds were discussed at length, including the biggest barriers, how we overcome them, and the value of being more connected. 👉Click here to read the full discussion: https://lnkd.in/ej7z77nV   Thanks again for all who attended!

  • 🎙️ New Civil Engineer podcast | How is the Building Safety Act changing UK construction and engineering? Sam Harland in our London studio speaks to Robert Hakimian for the latest episode of the Engineers Collective. 🎧 Listen back here: https://lnkd.in/eUtFEqx3 Sam shares insights on: 🔹 How the Building Safety Act has introduced new processes, with the tightening of design competency requirements, the introduction of the gateway process and the creation of the Golden Thread for buildings 🔹 What this means for works on existing buildings, and the important role engineers have to play in carrying out extensive investigations to uncover their structural health and history 🔹 The challenges surrounding implementation of the Act and how it might drive the future of the sector. “A lot of the changes come down to system thinking and really understanding where we fit in in the wider system. Working with fire engineers and architects, and understanding how they contribute to the design, and how we can share information that is best for the project. “It ties in with all our other design aspects, including sustainable design and building reuse. The built environment is going through a huge change at the moment, and the Building Safety Act a part of that. Sharing knowledge and understanding with each other is so important.” - Sam Harland, associate director at Civic Engineers #BuildingSafetyAct #structural #engineering #sustainabledesign

The future of Yorkshire’s cities depends on designing and planning neighbourhoods and public spaces with their communities, both present and future, at the heart of every decision. 💚 There were some great conversations at the Yorkshire Emerging Development Hotspots event yesterday, where our Leeds director Leah Stuart joined Joanna van der Veen, Steve Ford, and Adrian Spawforth on a panel exploring how our cities are evolving, across Yorkshire and beyond. For years, urban spaces were designed around commuters - people traveling in for work and leaving at the end of the day. But that’s changing. Now, the focus is on creating cities where people want to live, not just work, and that means rethinking transport, infrastructure, and public spaces to make them truly liveable today. 🏙️ 🌱 🚎 It was also insightful to hear from local council leaders on the opportunities and challenges in their areas - reinforcing how important collaboration is in shaping the future of our Yorkshire cities. Thanks to Place Yorkshire and Sally Gibson for bringing together such a fantastic mix of voices. It’s exciting to be part of the conversation!

  • 🎙️ “Where you live, your health prospects, the climatic resilience of your home, all of these things are interdependent, it’s one single system. And the convergence of all these aspects is accelerating.” Our CEO Stephen O'Malley shares what we mean when we say 'System Thinking', and why both technical excellence and emotional intelligence are vital if we are to have a positive impact for people and place, in a podcast with David Taylor out at MIPIM https://lnkd.in/eq6YWqTj 👇

Editor of NLQ, New London Weekly. Editor/co-owner of Velocity Magazine 🎙️Podcaster - 'Detailer' - commute-sized conversations about the city. Also: Tracks of my Tyres (Spotify) 🎙️ Strategic consultant, ING Media

🎙️ 🚶➡️ Last week I wandered down the Croisette in Cannes with Stephen O'Malley, where he reflected not just on the MIPIM property conference we were both dodging the rain and gilets at, but also Civic Engineers' system thinking, post-riots Dublin, Manchester, housing, joinery - and even an architect spending a month in a cow barn to better know the potential occupants of his designs. 🎙️ 🚶♂️ 🐄 This was for the latest episode of Detailer - the podcast I do with some of the most interesting people shaping our places and cities. 🌳 O'Malley is chief executive of the quickly growing firm, and is passionate about urban infrastructure - but reaches first for nature-based solutions. 🚲 And he'd have seen a lot of that as he rode his bike on the Club Peloton charity cycle ride down to Cannes from London, raising money with 65 other riders for Coram and Cyclists Fighting Cancer in the process. O'Malley reflects on the ups and downs of the ride, the camaraderie, the food, dealing with the lack of sleep, and the forging of new and lasting friendships. 🌆 He talks, too, about his work on the Strangeways Regeneration Framework, getting inspired by working with the late Will Alsop, Urban Splash's Nick Johnson and Tom Bloxham in New Islington, his work with NLA and Opportunity London, and being asked to be part of the taskforce to repair Dublin's centre after the riots. 🇫🇷 There's time to chat about strategies for getting the most out of MIPIM, about the 'patchy' nature of the market, and O'Malley's aspirations both for himself ('I'm just getting started, David') and the firm. 🐮 Oh - and the cows thing. O'Malley recounts the tale of how, a few years back on a residential summer school, he met a Finnish architect who had completed the design of a cow barn. But to really appreciate the cow's needs, the architect lived with them for a month! 💪 Thanks so much for sparing the time to talk to me, Stephen, about such a breadth of projects and topics , and with such clear and infectious drive and enthusiasm. 'It's an absolute burning passion of mine', he says, 'to respect the climate, and deal with that in a much more positive way, not just because it's the right thing to do, but because I believe it adds a huge amount of value to the lives of the people that then get to interact with it and spend time with it' --- Check out the podcast here on Apple: 👉 https://lnkd.in/eM_82AVF Here on Spotify: 👉 https://lnkd.in/e_8gqyqD Here on Amazon: 👉 https://lnkd.in/e3sVAq5X And here on Acast: 👉 https://lnkd.in/e7T5MKEv --- Gareth Atkinson Katrina Davis Andrew Ruck Nick Hanmer Kate Gordon
