Today is International Day of Women and Girls in Science, an annual observance that celebrates the achievements and promotes the full and equal access and participation of women in STEM fields. The day recognises the importance of gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls in the scientific community. This year, we speak to two of our colleagues who have recently returned from maternity leave, Anushuya Tamang and Stephanie Holliday, as they give us insight into their experience of motherhood and science. Today is World Cancer Day and the theme for 2025 is 'United by Unique', highlighting that every person with cancer is unique, and yet united by their diagnoses. At Cellomatics we recognise that understanding uniqueness is key to overcoming boundaries to improving treatment outcomes. We assess responses to potential new therapeutics (e.g., those harnessing the body’s own immune system to target cancer cells) by comparing the variation in responses between samples from multiple donors. Immune cells are persuaded to kill or ‘eat’ (phagocytose) cancer cells, and the speed and effectiveness of these processes may differ between people. This approach shows great potential in treating blood cancers, but research continues in obtaining comparable successes in targeting solid tumours. Together on #WorldCancerDay, we are #UnitedByUnique. The image below shows phagocytosis of beads labelled with a green fluorescent dye by both donor immune cells and the monocytic Thp-1 immortalized cell line. The green dye is pH-specific and becomes fluorescent as it enters acidic phagosomes; cells are labelled pink and their nuclei are labelled blue.
