Ahead of our Cumbria Dinner, our CEO, Rain Newton-Smith, had the privilege of visiting BAE Systems in Barrow-in-Furness. This visit provided an excellent opportunity to understand the significant contributions Barrow is making towards national growth targets and to witness the impressive work being undertaken as part of ‘Project Barrow’. We were also delighted to welcome BAE Systems Managing Director, Steve Timms for an insightful fireside chat at our dinner.   This visit comes in the same week as our announcement on the launch of the Defence & Economic Growth taskforce, which will be jointly chaired by Rt Hon Rachel Reeves & Defence Secretary John Healey MP This taskforce aims to identify opportunities to drive UK growth and productivity through strategic investments in UK Defence capability and production.   BAE Systems plays a pivotal role in the UK's Defence capability, and we are proud to have BAE Systems CEO, Dr. Charles Woodburn, serve on the taskforce.   Read more about the taskforce, its remit and schedule in our press release: https://bit.ly/3YevCGc

Our CEO, Rain Newton-Smith, took part in a tripartite meeting with Department for Business and Trade today, to discuss the government's #makeworkpay agenda and the Employment Rights Bill. For us the challenge has never been what the government wants to achieve, but the unintended consequences of how it implements it. The CBI is committed to working with the government to find the right landing zone for the reforms and we were grateful for the opportunity to be able to share our members’ concerns that the legislation as drafted risks increasing the burden of both costs and bureaucracy on employers while decreasing their ability to create and fill jobs. As the Bill makes its way into the Upper House next week, we are calling on the Lords to scrutinise this legislation to ensure it is genuinely pro-business and pro-worker. Key areas of concern include: ▪️The impact on hiring of reforms to unfair dismissal ▪️The consequences of a right to be offered a guaranteed hours contract for firms’ capacity to offer flexible work ▪️That good businesses’ every day operations will be hamstrung by reforms to dismissal and re-engagement ▪️ That removing accountability mechanisms on trade unions is a recipe for conflict, not co-operation ▪️That increases to statutory sick pay liability will disproportionately burden those firms who are most likely to employ those who are likely to be off sick

On 29th April the Employment Rights Bill moves to Committee Stage in the UK House of Lords. Along with the British Chambers of Commerce, Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), Institute of Directors (IoD) and Make UK we have written to peers to ask them to scrutinise and improve the legislation to ensure it is genuinely both pro-business and pro-worker, as outlined in the Daily Telegraph today. https://bit.ly/4jd0iQm
